Eng 7 Paper 2 What does the map tell us? Woodhams Thomas Friedman writes, “The world is flat.” Harm De Blij, counters with “the world is round.” Looking at a specific issue (or related issues) consider how “geography, culture and destiny” shape the forces of “globalization.” You will need to define what each writer means by their statements, and take a side or forge a middle ground, by synthesizng a view that makes sense to you. You may see their views as complementary, as two sides of a coin, or in opposition. The over-all question to research and consider is how does the power of place affect the forces of globalization for your particular issue. So you will need to use evidence from “The Power of Place” as well as evidence from the articles by Thomas Friedman that we consider. You should also use evidence from 2-3 other sources (in addition to Friedman and De Blij) to build your discussion. These should be credible sources, from academic or educational sources. This paper should also include an analysis of at least 4 maps or graphs that reflect sides of the argument; you will use these maps to anchor the discussion (two of them can be from "The Power of Place"). Note: I will provide a list of potential map sources to use for this assignment. THE POWER OF PLACE will be on reserve in the Chabot library. Requirements: 1. At least 4 maps (to set up a process, comparison or connection) 2. Direct evidence from articles and essays that relate to the maps and help you understand them, along with the Friedman/De Blij material 3. An arguable thesis statement responding to the topic and specific issue, connecting ideas, body paragraphs with topic sentences, evidence and critical analysis, interesting conclusion based on your understanding of the maps and research Length: 6-8 pages (1500-2000 words), typed and double-spaced, MLA format, “works cited” page—maps should be attached to the paper before the “works cited page,” and are not counted in the required length above.
