In your graduate work you will aim to publish papers in scientific and technical journals. All journal articles must have an abstract. Two types of abstracts are indicative and
informative.
1. Use the web to learn about the differences between indicative and informative abstracts
and explain them.
2. Some journals explicitly require informative abstracts. For example, the instructions
for Limnology and Oceanography at
http://aslo.org/lo/instructions/authors.html#Abstract
state that the abstract must be informative. Explain which sort of abstract you would
prefer and explain why journals would want informative abstracts.
3. Find the paper by Moore et al. (2012, Ground Water, 50) on the design of collector
wells. Explain whether the abstract is informative or indicative. If it is indicative,
recommend specific ways to make it informative. Suggest other ways the abstract can
be improved.
4. Find the paper by Sharma et al. (2012, J. Hydrology, 428) involving riverbank filtration. Explain whether the abstract is informative or indicative. If it is indicative,
recommend specific ways to make it informative. Suggest other ways the abstract can
be improved.
