Chabot College Basic Skills Committee
April 28, 2015
Minutes - Final
Attendees: Michael Robinson (SSCC), Jennifer Lange (Sci/Math), Jeremy Wilson (IR), Mike
Hodsdon (Engl), Jane Wolford (L. Connection, AHSS), Rachael Tupper-Eoff (Learning
Connection), Michelle Iriarte (Cal Works), Kate Dolorito (SSCC), Deonne Kunkel (PRBC/CPT),
Carolyn Arnold (IR)
1. Review March 10th and April 14th minutes. Minutes from these previous meetings were approved.
2. Passion and Purpose Project Presentation Tiffany Baggetta then gave a presentation about the Passion and Purpose Program.S he talked
about the trajectory of current initiatives/events as well as the program’s future goals and
projects.
She shared early first semester student data that has been researched about the Passion and
Purpose Program. The data showed that new Passion and Purpose students were more likely to
persist from the Fall to Spring semester than comparable students not in Passion and Purpose.
Tiffany said that the goal of the program is to really impact students, and to continue influencing
them in a positive way. Tiffany talked about how Passion and Purpose is a space where students
can do many different activities. They learn and interact with each other. Sean added that one
dream of the program is to develop curriculum that supports project based learning and that
offers students units for doing ongoing projects. Tiffany said that students share knowledge with
fellow Chabot students, and now the students are also helping in high schools.
The program doesn’t have actual funding at this point, though the Basic Skills Committee played
an important role by supporting research, movies, and teacher training that helped create the
program.
3. Basic Skills Strategic Plan – dissemination update and handout Carolyn Arnold presented the Basic Skills Committee Strategic Plan to faculty senate last week,
and they accepted it. She gave them the Logic Model chart and a one-page overview that highlighted the accomplishments of BSC in the last five years, and recent updates to our plan goals.
She pointed out that under each of our 4 objectives (Get students off to a strong start, Transition
from BSI funds to full college funding of student learning support; Infuse contextualized basic
skills instruction into content areas, and Improve the basic skills curriculum to increase student
outcomes), Chabot staff members, on and off BSC, are working on moving these forward, so this
plan represents much of what is already happening. Gave example of Career Pathway Trust (CPT) Grant is focusing on assessment using multiple measures to help students get off to a
strong (and accurately assessed) start. Through this grant, local high schools and our Math &
English Departments are working together to identify measures other than our assessment test
scores that accurately predict student success in English and Math, and hopefully get more
students starting at higher levels. Jane – Math is working on this?
Carolyn – Yes, they are looking at using a test given in high school (EAP – a test given
in the Junior year), as a placement tool. Of they score at the college level ready level of math,
they will be accepted into higher level math courses. If not, and they take remedial high schools
courses that lead to better preparation, they may also qualify, although at this point, the Math
department will only take college ready. English has also approved the use of this test to place
students into English 1A if they score at the college ready level and/or take the remedial course.
4. Career Pathway Trust (CPT) grant At this point, Deonne Kunkel, Coordinator of the CPT Grant and FYE, came in to give an
overview of the student intake and assessment work being done through the CPT grant.
Deonne – First Year Experience (FYE) is influencing how PSCN / registration is being
done. PSCN 25 has been extended by 30 min to help with appropriate registration and to provide
abbreviated student educational goals to all students.
Deonne is working w/ Ming and Math to look at gathering data on multiple measures
other than a test for assessment into math courses. San Lorenzo has written a data sharing request
– they have offered to give us their high school transcript data so we can analyze it and
determine the best multiple measures to use to place their students in math and English. They are
just waiting for us to specify the measures and approve this exchange. What data do we want to
request? How will we use the data? Math wants to do a pilot, to look at data next year & study
student progress. Then can pilot identified indicators in Fall 2016.
This has process questions and data/indicator questions that have to be worked out in
order to smoothly fit into our assessment process, so that students are automatically given their
placement recommendation. This will be worked on during 2015 in preparation for Feb 2016
testing for Fall 2016.
Jeremy – Are we working w/ CalPASS? Can they be an intermediary?
Carolyn – We could probably do research in CalPASS but most of our high schools
haven’t entered data. In addition, the data entry lags behind and isn’t real time, so it can’t be
used for placement, just research.
Carolyn – Updating members on website (??)
5. Committee charge and membership A handout on these was given out in preparation for discussion at the next meeting. It was a snapshot of what is now posted on the website. Meeting ended at 12:57
