MUHL 1308 Response
Have changes been made in the base syllabus for your
core courses in response to assessment results?
Grading policies for in-class quizzes (see below) have been revised to
encourage better class attendance, thereby improving student
comprehension and retention of course materials.
Have you adjusted the way the courses are assessed, the
examinations, or the base content in the areas listed
above in response to assessment results?
We have begun administering short in-class quizzes at random,
unannounced times throughout the semester. These help assess
whether students are understanding basic course concepts and also
encourage better class attendance. Fall 2012
Have you made any changes in the way content is
delivered such as adding on-line modules, improving
classroom technology, using on-line quizzes or exams,
making lectures available to students on-line, or
flipping the classroom?
We are currently in the process of updating our online Blackboard
supplements and exam delivery for the new version of Blackboard 9,
which should be in place for fall semester 2013. In addition, students
have now been given access to the course textbook website, which
provides supplementary listening and reading materials.
Other changes have included providing guest speakers and performers,
when possible. For example, David Cho, music director and conductor
of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, recently spoke to the class prior to
an upcoming concert. He issued a short quiz after he spoke and gave
free concert tickets to the students who provided the best answers.
Students are given credit for attending performances and providing
written concert reports.
Have you made any changes in how students are provided
with help to improve their comprehension of the material
such as on-line tutoring,face-to-face or group help
sessions, etc.
In-class group discussion periods are scheduled before each unit exam
and the final exam. Students are asked to identify aurally stylistic and
historical characteristics of musical works, composers, and styles
studied in the course.
Students are also provided assistance, as needed, through office hours
and e-mail communication.
