ARCH 2311 World Architecture is continually assessed by a number of methods: self-assessment by the professor, feedback from the teaching assistants during and at the end of the course, feedback from students during and after the course, formal university course evaluations at the end of the semester, and my own course evaluations distributed to the students at the end of the semester. When issues come to light during the semester, I may institute immediate changes if merited, otherwise any changes may be incorporated into the following year’s course. This is a continual and fluid process, which optimizes course operation and student learning. Most changes have been made in the first and second years of teaching this course (Fall 2007 and Fall 2008). Occasional tweaks are made as needed. No substantial changes to the course have been made as a result of assessment since AY2010-11, except for a change in how students receive their results from multiple-choice exams which permits greater understanding of the review of their results. Changes to University-wide Scantron Grading (Option “H”), 2010-2012 As a result of my work with Gary Johnson of TTU Technology Operation & Systems Management in Fall 2009, resulting from my identification of multiple problems with exam processing (including a major problem resulting from the switch to Banner that eliminated student names from the grade reports), TOSM instituted the new Grading Option “H” which became available for all University Scantron grading in 2010, based on my preference for grading reportage. Option “H” permits reportage of the number of an exam question answered incorrectly, the correct answer, and the student’s incorrect answer Formerly, only the number of the number of an exam question answered incorrectly and the correct answer were reported Option “H” is a significant improvement for the students who now can see which answers they had incorrectly chosen and recorded, since students are not returned the actual Scantron sheets during post-exam reviews because of the possibility of their changing answers on the form Option “H” was first used for ARCH 2311 in Fall 2010 However, this information was only provided to me, the instructor, in a comprehensive printed list with all students. TOSM would not print individual pages of results for each student. As a result, for Fall 2009, Fall 2010, and Fall 2011, I had to enlarge this report on a photocopier and physically cut the report into horizontal strips for each student to see his exam results. In 2012 TOSM made Option “H”’s particular form of reportage standard. It also ceased printing hard copy reports and began to deliver a range of electronic reports, which included for the first time ever individual student results on separate pages. Finally, in Fall 2012, I was able to print individual test reports for each student with his exam grade and a breakdown of all incorrectly answered questions (something I wanted, and asked for, since Fall 2007). Now, each student has a copy of his complete results during class when the exam is comprehensively reviewed question-by-question.
