RESPONSE WRITING, America Is In the Heart
Fall, 2011
As shown on your semester calendar, you will writing a (TYPED) one-page
minimum (maximum, two) response to each of the first three parts of our text, above.
The most important part of this writing is that you avoid summarizing, but instead
focus on and develop your thoughts and ideas (even, possibly, related experience) to
what Bulosan has to say. These responses are worth 20 points each and will not be
accepted late (due, typed, at the beginning of class). If you are absent when they are
due, you must email them to me BY the due dates. Topics follow:
1) Tues. Aug. 30th: Poverty, social justice and leaving the homeland (you do not
have to include all three, but you may choose one or two)
2) Tues. Sept. 6th: Immigration then and now, and/ or the American paradox, or
what Bulosan calls the “two Americas”
3) Tues. Sept. 13: Labor rights; workers’ organization, then and now
The idea is to build potential for your first essay which will be based on one of the
above topics. Details on that to come.
