Chabot College Fall 2011 Course Outline for World Languages 1L WORLD LANGUAGES LAB Catalog Description: 1L - World Languages Lab .5-1 unit (May be repeated 3 times) World language grammar, pronunciation, conversation. Exploration of cultural components related to the target language. Co-requisite: concurrent enrollment in a World Language course: 1A, 1B, 2A, or 2B. 1.5-3 hours laboratory. [Typical contact hours: 26.25 – 52.5] Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. demonstrate improved use of grammar, pronunciation, and conversation skills in target language; demonstrate increased understanding of the culture related to the target language; use Internet resources to increase cultural and linguistic awareness related to the target language; perform comparative analysis between one's own culture and the target culture; use personal learning style to enhance foreign language learning process. Computerized language lab with digital audio and Internet access Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress 1. Typical Assignments a. Demonstrate understanding of the culture by using interactive audio and audiovisual programs on CDs, DVDs, CD ROMS, target language websites, etc., featuring culturally authentic and contextual guided speaking, reading, and writing activities such as cued repetition of native speech, dictations, cued oral responses, listening comprehension, and interactive realia (culturally authentic texts). b. Demonstrate fundamentals of pronunciation of the target language. 2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress a. Class participation with the completion of the required number of contact time hours b. Review of student logs c. Recordings from the language laboratory to evaluate pronunciation skills d.
