Chabot College Fall 2010 Course Outline for Welding Technology 68 CERTIFICATION PREPARATION Catalog Description: 68 - Certification Preparation (May be repeated 3 times) 0.5-2 units Welding process preparation for certification exams including the theory of American Welding Society D1.1, American Society of Mechanical Engineers Section IX, American Petroleum Institute 1104, includes laboratory practice in skills needed to take these exams. 1.5 to 6 hours laboratory. [Typical contact hours: laboratory 26.25 - 105] Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. understand the AWS codes and standards to be employed for welding performance tests; prepare the materials per code specifications for welding; select the proper welding machine settings; complete a certification examination of required standards; produce sound welds on 1/8 to 5/8 inch plates using SMAW, GMAW, GTAW and FCAW processes in flat and horizontal positions; 6. demonstrate proficient welding skill reflected in sound weld samples for the position and code selected; 7. perform a Welding Performance Qualification Test. Course Content: 1. Welding power supplies selection and settings related to their application 2. Welding practice on plates and profiles applying FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, and SMAW processes in 1G, 2G, 1F, and 2F position 3. Performance of destructive and nondestructive tests using plasma and fuel cutting practice and shop related equipment 4. Study of the welding metallurgical modification of the weld bed and its HAZ (heat affected zone) 5. Identification and critique the methods of correcting discontinuities and defects as defined by code specifications 6. Estimating welding costs 7. Welding certification preparation 8. OSHA industrial safety requirements regulations 9. AWS Welding Performance Qualification Test of welding process and position 10. Equipment and shop maintenance Methods of Presentation: 1. 2. 3. 4. Typical Assignment Properly set up and adjust the SMAW machine, select the appropriate settings (1/8 in. diameter electrodes), select two pieces of mild steel sheet (5/8 thick) and perform a butt joint, wave beats welds in the vertical up position a. Obtain 5/8 in. plate and oxyacetylene cut and bevel along the longest side at 30 degree angle two 7 in. by 4 in. plates b. Obtain 6010 and 7018 electrodes of the necessary quantity and size (1/8 in.) c. Set the power supply on DC reverse polarity (90 to 105 amperes for 6010 and 110 to 130 amperes for 7018) d. Set up and tack plates at each end and in the vertical position (make sure that it is connected to the work connection) e. Perform a root pass followed by a hot pass using 6010 electrodes f. Chip the slag from the weld brush and inspect g. Perform the rest of the passes as many as necessary with 7018 electrodes h. Chip the slag from the weld brush and inspect i. Submit the welds for instructor inspection j. Practice until will produce consistently sound welds k. Cut two11/2 in. testing specimens across the practiced welds and perform two bending tests one face up and the second face down l. Inspect and discuss the results with your instructor m. Prepare the test to be sent to the inspection lab for further analysis 2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress a. Class participation b. Laboratory assignments and projects. c. Student laboratory written reports d. Final exam: performance test Textbook(s) (Typical): Welding Lab Manual, Doug Snyder, 2004* *Rationale: This book more completely covers the subject matter taught in the Welding Technology program than any other textbook we have found.
