Chabot College February 1996 Removed Fall 2006 Course Outline for Theater Arts 39 MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP Catalog Description: 39 - Musical Theater Workshop 3 units Training in performance skills for the musical theater, with emphasis on acting and stage movement. Corequisite: Music 39. 3 hours. Expected Outcome for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should: 1. 2. 3. 4. have the ability to stage and perform a musical theater scene and song with a partner; have the ability to stage and perform a musical theater solo; have the ability to perform successfully in a group musical theater number; have an understanding of musical theater as a unique art form. Course Content: 1. Exercises, workshops, performing experiences and coaching in staging and acting in musical scenes and musical numbers a. Ensemble musical numbers b. Duet scenes leading into songs c. Solo scenes and songs 2. Study of musical theater as an art form, including analysis of its individual and collaborative parts-music, lyrics, libretto, acting, choreography, voice, etc. Methods of Instruction: 1. Workshops and demonstrations on musical theater acting, choreography and staging 2. Preparation, rehearsal and in-class performance of musical theater ensemble numbers, scenes and solos 3. Coaching and evaluation of individual and group work 4. Video feedback through taping of scenes and numbers Evaluation of Student Progress: 1. Feedback and coaching by the instructor 2. Feedback and evaluations by the class of performed work 3. Self-evaluation through viewing of video tapes of performed work Grading is based on attendance and participation, amount of improvement seen throughout the quarter, the spirit of involvement in the class, and grades given on prepared performance work.
