BEGINNING SPANISH
Catalog Description
1A - Beginning Spanish
5 units
Beginning study and practice in the basic foreign language learning skills: listening, speaking,
reading, composition, and culture in Spanish. Strongly recommended: eligibility for English 1A or 52A.
5 hours.

Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcome for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. demonstrate reading, writing, speaking and understanding skills of elementary Spanish;
2. demonstrate understanding of various aspects of Hispanic culture;
3. demonstrate appreciation of the history, geography and literature of Spanish-speaking peoples
and their countries;
4. demonstrate an appreciation of the influence of Spanish on the English language and vice versa.
Course Content:
1. Functional grammar and vocabulary of Spanish
2. Cultural components of the Hispanic world
3. Other aspects of the Hispanic world, its people and their customs
Methods of Presentation:
1. Interactive activities between professor and students and between students and students in the
target language
2. Audio-visual material presented and discussed in the target language
3. Laboratory exercises
