Chabot College Fall 2001 Replaced Fall 2010 Course Outline for Physical Education 13R AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAINING REVIEW Catalog Description: PHED 13R: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Review May be repeated 3 times 0.5 units To review the skills and knowledge needed by lifeguards to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Upon successful completion of this course students will receive American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid. Prerequisite: Physical Education 13. 6 hours lecture, 10 hours laboratory total. Prerequisite Skills: 1. demonstrate the understanding of the value of behaving in a professional manner; 2. recognize specific characteristic behaviors of distressed swimmers, active and passive drowning victims, and near-drowning victims; 3. recognize an aquatic emergency, and act promptly and appropriately; 4. perform equipment based skills and techniques used by professional lifeguards; 5. perform proper techniques to care for a possible spinal injury; 6. provide first aid and CPR.
