Chabot College Fall 2002 Course Outline for Physical Education 2 INTRODUCTORY FIRE SCIENCE CONDITIONING Catalog Description: PHED 2IFS – Introductory Fire Science Conditioning 1 unit This is an introductory physical conditioning and lecture course designed to prepare the fire science student for Fire Fighter Academy and pre-employment physical ability testing, and for a successful career in the fire service. Course sessions will address aerobic and strength training, proper lifting, warm-up and flexibility techniques, training principles and elements of wellness. Proper handling of fire service equipment will be introduced. Classes will take place indoors and out and will include occupationaloriented tasks as well as aerobic conditioning, muscular endurance and physical agility tasks. Students will undergo physical assessment at the onset and conclusion of the semester. Strongly recommended concurrent enrollment in Intermediate Fire Science Conditioning. 3 hours per week Prerequisite Skills: None (Concurrent enrollment in Intermediate Fire Science Conditioning highly recommended) Expected Outcomes for the Students: This course is designed to provide the student an introduction to the aspects of physical fitness and wellness, and hands-on training with select fire fighting equipment. The class will include a combination of lecture and labs based on the following: 1. Goal Setting and Assessment 2. Nutrition and Weight Management 3.
