Chabot College September, 1992 Course Outline for Physical Education 1 WOMEN'S WEIGHT TRAINING Catalog Description: PHED 1WW – Women's Weight Training 0.5 unit Physical Education sections are organized to include activities in four areas. One of the four areas is body mechanics. Women's Weight Training comes under the area of body mechanics. This course is designed to provide basic information to students wishing to improve their physical fitness through the use of progressive resistance exercises. The material for the course is predicated upon the use of sound physiological principles. The class will meet 2 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for the Students: Students finishing this course should experience an increase in flexibility, strength, and endurance. They should also gain a better understanding of the anatomy of the body and its relation to care and maintenance through a sound program of exercise and nutrition. Course Content: 1. Safety factors and precautions. 2. Care and use of equipment. 3. Explanation and demonstration of the following exercises: a. Basic warm-up exercises - primarily stretching in nature. b. Use of the universal gym - four stations: 1) Military press 2) Leg press 3) Bench press 4) Chest pull c. Use of the following pieces of apparatus: 1) Bend and reach board 2) Incline board 3) Leg extension machine 4) Abdominal board 5) Toe-raise machine 6) Trim Twist 7) Loveable legs 8) Chinning bar d. Every class meeting will conclude with a run designed to increase cardiovascular endurance. e. Instruction will be given by the whole-and-part method emphasizing an individualized and total class approach. Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: The instructor will evaluate each student and assign a final grade against the following factors: 1. Satisfactory attendance and punctuality for the entire quarter. 2. Satisfactory completion of all assigned tasks and exercises for the quarter. 3. Satisfactory demonstration of all assigned exercises. Textbook: None Special Student Material: 1. Tennis shoes 2. Gym uniform 3.
