Chabot College June, 1989 Course Outline for Physical Education 1 WEIGHT TRAINING Catalog Description: PHED 1WT – Weight Training 0.5 unit This course is designed to improve the student's physical condition through a series of progressive resistance exercises. The material and course content is based on the principles of weight training that have been found to be effective for beginning students. Individual variances in physique, ability and desire provide the instructor with a wide range of teaching approaches. The class will meet 2 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for the Students: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. promote interest in weight training as a carry-over activity; 2. learn the fundamental weight training techniques; 3. develop a more advanced form of muscular strength and endurance. Course Content: 1. Safety factors and conduct in the weight room. 2. Care and use of equipment. 3. Demonstration of basic weight training exercises for the various body parts: a. Stomach. b. Legs. c. Back. d. Chest. e. Shoulders. f. Arms. 4. Explanation and demonstration of the various resistive exercise machines. Methods of Presentation: The course is presented by the lecture-demonstration method. Each principle, lift, technique and theory shall be presented to the class as a whole. Individualized programs will be set up by the student with the approval of the instructor. Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: 1. 2. 3. 4.
