ELEMENTARY ITALIAN
Catalog Description
1B - Elementary Italian
5 units
Continuation of the skills developed in Italian 1A. Beginning study and practice in the basic foreign
language skills: listening, speaking, reading, composition, and culture in Italian. Prerequisite: Italian
1A (completed with grade of "C" or higher). 5 hours.
[Typical contact hours: 87.5]
Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course the student should be able to:
1. demonstrate reading, writing, speaking and understanding skills of elementary Italian;
2. know and appreciate the culture, history and literature of Italian-speaking peoples as well as the
geography of their country;
3. demonstrate and/or discuss integral facets of the culture of Italian-speaking people.
Expected Outcome for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. read, write, and speak elementary Italian;
2. identify and assess the value of the Italian culture and history;
3. evaluate the influence of the history, geography and literature of Italian-speaking peoples and
their countries, and of the influence of Italian on the English language and vice versa.
Course Content:
1. Advanced grammar points and topical vocabulary of Italian such as verb tenses and parts of speech
2. Continuing studies of cultural components of the Italian world such as food and sports.
3. Additional aspects of the Italian world, its people and their customs
Methods of Presentation:
1. Interactive activities between professor and students, and between students and students in the
target language
2. Audio-visual material presented and discussed in the target language
3. Laboratory exercises
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical Assignments (all in the target language)
a. Oral presentations
b. Written compositions
c. Readings
d. Give an oral presentation on an Italian holiday such as Festival de Venezia
2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress
a. Active student participation in the target language
b. Class performance and participation
c. Tests and quizzes at regular intervals
d. Final examination
