Chabot College Fall 2003 Course Outline for Italian 1A BEGINNING ITALIAN Catalog Description 1A - Beginning Italian 5 units Beginning study and practice in the basic foreign language skills: listening, speaking, reading, composition, and culture in Italian. Strongly recommended: eligibility for English 1A or 52A. 5 hours. [Typical contact hours: 87.5] Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcome for Students: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate reading, writing, speaking and understanding skills of elementary Italian; 2. know and appreciate the culture, history and literature of Italian-speaking peoples as well as the geography of their country; 3. demonstrate and/or discuss integral facets of the culture of Italian-speaking people. Course Content: 1. Functional grammar and vocabulary of the Italian language to allow the students to begin to communicate in Italian 2. Discuss in simple terms their likes and dislikes and to inquire in culturally sensitive terms into likes and dislikes of others 3. Culture of the Italian people Methods of Presentation: 1. Interactive activities between professor and students, and between students and students in the target language 2. Audio-visual material presented and discussed in the target language 3. Laboratory exercises Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: 1. Typical Assignments (all in the target language) a. Oral presentations b. Written compositions c. Readings d.
