Chabot College Fall 2009 Replaced Fall 2010 Course Outline for ESL 108 BASIC SPELLING FOR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Catalog Description: 108 - Basic Spelling for English as a Second Language 1 unit Basic sound/spelling patterns of English. Develops an understanding of the sounds and symbols of English, including open/closed syllables, short and long vowel sounds, consonant and consonant cluster sounds, spelling of homophones and other problem words in everyday English. Includes basic dictionary use. 1 hour. [Typical contact hours: 17.5] Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate understanding of the basic sound/symbol correspondence of written English; 2. accurately produce in writing commonly used words in standard English, including words which follow the conventional spelling patterns as well as non-conventional spellings. Course Content: 1. Group instruction on basic spelling pattern and homophones 2. Individual work on basic spelling patterns and homophones 3. Dictionary use Method of Presentation: 1.
