INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
Catalog Description:
40 - International Business
3 units
Exploration of major factors involved in developing international trade. A managerial
overview of globalization, theories of global trade, monetary environment, foreign market
analysis, sociocultural forces, and international operations. Emphasis on current events in
the global business environment. 3 hours
Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

discuss the environment in which international business is conducted;
identify and explain the dynamics behind multinational enterprises: why companies go
abroad, problems and risks encountered, and the incentives for doing so;
demonstrate the functional management aspects of a multinational operation and its
possible effects on the home and host nation;
discuss the complexities of the balance of trade and economic interactions among
nations;
analyze investment and marketing opportunities in foreign markets;
compare and contrast economic theories of international business;
describe and demonstrate procedures and documentation necessary to import a
product from a foreign country, including purchase order, transfer of international
payments, insurance, shipping, customs quota, and duty;
discuss the significance of the sociocultural environment for international business;
critically assess globalization and its impact on the modern world.

a. Choose a country. Develop a 10-15 minute presentation addressing five major
points:
1) General information about the country.
2) Describe its political system. Assess its political risk.
3) Describe the economic system.
4) Describe the cultural system. Use Hofstede’s dimensions.
5) Provide conclusions. Would you invest into the country’s economy? Why or
why not?
b. Assume you are given a two-year assignment to serve as a general manager in a
manufacturing firm in a country of your choice. Write a report that addresses
reasons why you would or would not accept the position.
