IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client for Macintosh
1
Chapter 1.
Overview
The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client for Macintosh performs backups and
archives of Apple computers. In this paper, we demonstrate how to backup, restore, archive,
and retrieve data for your Mac OS based computer, as well as general best practices about
setting up and using the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client. We focus on Mac OS
10.5 and highlight any differences that might occur if you are using Mac OS 10.4.
This paper is written for the administrators who will back up the machine and not from the
point of view of the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator. However, administrators will need
to gather some information from the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator. Also, we assume
some basic knowledge of using and administering the Mac OS.

1.1 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager overview
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) is an enterprise class data backup and recovery program
that allows users to store data with space management, backup, and archive tools or to
recover their data with recall, restore, and retrieve utilities.
Tivoli Storage Manager uses a relational database and recovery or transaction log for storing
the metadata, configurations, and log data. To store actual user data, a cascading hierarchy
of storage media is used. Additional archival devices, such as an emulated tape from a Virtual
Tape Library, can be used, and duplicate copies of these devices can be created for external
storage or offsite management.
To prevent sequential access device contention, Tivoli Storage Manager implements the
receipt of small files from large numbers of clients to a random access disk pool. When
received, the data spools to a smaller number of high-speed tape devices. Additionally,
because Tivoli Storage Manager is highly flexible, other configurations are possible to suit
each user’s particular needs.
The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client is the most commonly used data source.
This client allows backup and restore of data selectively and incrementally. Referred to as
Incremental Forever, each unique client+filespace+path+file combination is catalogued
separately for storage. Another data source provided by the Backup-Archive client is Archive
(and retrieve). Through this source, groups of objects are generated for storage as a single
unit. In contrast to the traditional full and incremental style of backup, Archive stores files
separately in smaller aggregates.
1.2 Tivoli Storage Manager for Mac overview
Tivoli Storage Manager is a client server based architecture. Thus, in the Tivoli Storage
Manager environment there will be at the minimum one centralized server where all of the
client’s data is sent. The server then applies the policies that you have, setting the appropriate
attributes and placing the data in the appropriate location. In this architecture, Tivoli Storage
Manager for Macintosh is the client piece that inspects and sends the data from the
Macintosh workstation and servers back to the central Tivoli Storage Manager server.
The Macintosh client is called the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client for
Macintosh. IBM has developed this client to address the need for a backup, disaster recovery,
and data management application for Macintosh systems. Although Mac OS X10.5 comes
with Time Machine as a built-in application, it does not fulfill the complete needs of an
enterprise. Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client for Mac allows an enterprise to
plan and provide true recovery and data management capabilities for their Macintosh clients.
As the Macintosh operating system continues to grow, IBM will continue to grow the Tivoli
Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client to use the Mac OS.

1.4 Summary of changes for Tivoli Storage Manager for Mac
In this section, we provide a summary of the Tivoli Storage Manager for Mac release features.
For additional information about these release enhancements, refer to the IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager for Macintosh Backup-Archive Clients Installation and User's Guide, SC32-0143.
1.4.1 Tivoli Storage Manager for Mac V5.4
Tivoli Storage Manager for Mac V5.4 includes the following enhancements:
򐂰 Password file format changes
The format of the Tivoli Storage Manager password file changed in V5.3.4. Your existing
password file will be migrated to the new format during the first session with a Tivoli
Storage Manager server after you install the client.
򐂰 Universal Binary support
You can now install and use Tivoli Storage Manager on all Intel-based Macintosh systems.
򐂰 Changed defaults for the managed services option
The managed services option default is changed to include schedule. By default, the
Client Acceptor Daemon (CAD) will manage the Web client and schedules. A new option,
none, has been added to support running dsmc schedule.
4
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client for Macintosh
򐂰 Option file and error log names
The Macintosh client has been changed to use the same option file and error log names
as the other Tivoli Storage Manager clients. The Tivoli Storage Manager User Preferences
file is now the dsm.opt file, and the Tivoli Storage Manager System Preferences file is now
the dsm.sys file.

Configuration
In this chapter, we discuss the different user modes that are associated with the Macintosh
Tivoli Storage Manager client. We also explain the initial configuration as well as how to
create a default configuration. In addition, this chapter contains information about creating
include-exclude lists, setting up the Web client, and setting up the scheduler service.
If you are installing a fresh client, you need to go through the initial configuration steps to
complete the installation of the Tivoli Storage Manager client. If you are migrating or
upgrading your Tivoli Storage Manager client, you do not have to go through the initial
configuration because the configuration was done during the setup of the previous client.
However, to ensure that your client reflects the recommended setup, you might want to look
though the configuration information.

3.1 User modes
When using Tivoli Storage Manager for the Mac, there are three types of recognized users:
򐂰 Root is the root user of the machine and has the real user ID of 0.
򐂰 Authorized users are any administrators that have execution privileges to the Tivoli
Storage Manager binary. Root inherits this authority.
򐂰 Non-authorized users are any normal users of the machine that do not own the Tivoli
Storage Manager binary.
Table 3-1 shows the different functions which the users can perform.
You can use this information to determine what type of user you need to log in as in order to
run the Tivoli Storage Manager client.

3.2 Setting a default options file
If you are the root user or a system administrator you can create a default options file that is
used for all users on the machine. This options file can be created to give all users of the
machine a single fixed configuration that the administrator maintains. The single fixed
configuration contained in the options file can be very useful to ensure that data that should
be backed up gets backed up and data that should not be backed up is excluded.
You can create your own options file, or you can use the sample options file that is provided at
the time of installation. If you are doing a fresh installation, the Tivoli Storage Manager client
creates a default option file for you during the configuration wizard, as discussed in 3.3, “Initial
configuration of a Tivoli Storage Manager V5.5 client” on page 35.
If you choose to use the sample options file:
1. Locate the installation directory at:
/Library/Application Support/Tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin
2. Find the dsm.opt.smp file.
3. Copy the file to the following directory:
/Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/
4. Rename the file to dsm.opt.
If you choose to create your own options file:
1. Go to the following directory:
/Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/
2. Create a file named dsm.opt.
If you decide to place the options file in a different directory or if you call the file by a different
name, you must change the DSM_CONFIG environment variable or use the optfile option to
Chapter 3. Configuration
31
reflect the changes that you choose. However, it is highly recommended that you use the
default convention for directory structure and naming that we describe here.
Note: The Tivoli Storage Manager Preferences editor will use the DSM_CONFIG and the
DSM_DIR environment variables or the default location and name to locate the Tivoli
Storage Manager options file.
At this point, you can edit the text file manually, or you can use the GUI that is provided to set
up the options in this file. If you choose to use TextEdit to edit the options file, you must save
the file as plain text. By default, TextEdit does not do this. Therefore, before you save the
document, you must click Format → Make PlainText. Do not add the .txt extension to the file
name.
3.2.1 Editing the options file using the GUI
If you chose to use the GUI to edit the options, follow these steps:
1. Open a finder window, and click the Applications link within the sidebar of the finder
window.
Note: You might have your applications already set as the default location to open in a
new finder window.
2. Navigate to the Tivoli Storage Manager folder, and double-click it. Three icons display

3.5 Creating an Include-Exclude list
By default, the Tivoli Storage Manager client backs up every file on a machine. However, this
method is not always the desired or recommended method to back up a machine. Therefore,
the Tivoli Storage Manager client has a list of files, directories, and objects that you can
exclude from the backup, which is called the Include-Exclude list.
There are two methods to edit or create the Include-Exclude list:
򐂰 Using the preferences editor from the Tivoli Storage Manager client GUI
򐂰 Editing the dsm.opt using a text editor
The easiest method is the Tivoli Storage Manager client GUI, which is our recommended
method to add or remove statements from the Include-Exclude list.
To add or remove statements from the Include-Exclude list using the GUI, follow these steps:
1. Open a finder window. Click the Applications link within the sidebar of the finder window.
Note: You might have your applications already set as the default location to open in a
new finder window.
2. Navigate to the Tivoli Storage Manager folder, and double-click it. Three icons display
(Figure 3-44):

3.6 Setting up the Web client
The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client is a Web interface that can be used to
back up and restore files without being directly in front of the machine. However, you cannot
configure the Tivoli Storage Manager client through the Web client interface.
When you use the TSM Tools for Administrators to set up the Client Acceptor Daemon as a
service on the machine, as outlined in our initial configuration, the Web client is configured as
a part of this process. However, if you want to further configure the Web client, you can do so
by following these steps:
1. Open a finder window. Click the Applications link within the sidebar of the finder window.
Note: You might have your applications already set as the default location to open in a
new finder window.

9. In the Web Client Preferences window (see Figure 3-61), you can configure the options,
as well as enable or disable the Web client. You can configure the following options:
– The HTTP Port that is used to access the Web client. By default, it is port 1581.
– The Web Agent Port, which is used by the Web client to issue commands back to the
Tivoli Storage Manager client. This option can be configured to a port from 1000
through 32767 to allow access through a firewall. By default the value is 0, which
means the Web client randomly picks a port in the above range.
– The Web CAD Port, which is used by the Web client to issues commands to the Client
Acceptor Daemon. This can be configured to be a port from 1000 through 32767. The
default value is 0, which means a free port in that range is assigned randomly.
– Under Managed Services Options, you need to have both the Web Client and the
Schedule options selected. If you do not want the Web Client, clear the box next to it.
However, make sure that you leave the Schedule option select because this is how
scheduled backups are initiated and performed.
– Revoke remote access privileges allows you to restrict administrators with client
access privilege from access the Web client for that machine. By default this option is
cleared.

3.7 Setting up the scheduler
The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client has a built-in scheduler that allows the
Tivoli Storage Manager server to perform scheduled backups of the machines in your
environment. In addition, Tivoli Storage Manager scheduled backups can be performed by
third-party applications as well. However, for this book, we discuss the scheduler function that
comes bundled with the Tivoli Storage Manager and, more specifically, how to configure the
client portion of the scheduler.
When you use the TSM Tools for Administrators to set up the Client Acceptor Daemon as a
service on the machine, as outlined in our initial configuration, the scheduler is initiated as a
part of this process. However, if you want to further configure the Web client, you can do so by
following these steps:
1. Open a finder window. Click the Applications link within the sidebar of the finder window.
Note: You might have your applications already set as the default location to open in a
new finder window.

9. In the Scheduler Preferences window (see Figure 3-69) you can configure the following
options for the scheduler of that machine:
– Schedule Mode
Allows you to set whether the Tivoli Storage Manager client polls at set intervals to
check for changes to the schedule or whether you can have the client prompted from
the server. Prompting can be used where a firewall is in place between the Tivoli
Storage Manager client and Tivoli Storage Manager server. The recommended method
to start all other clients is to have them set for polling with an interval of four hours.
– Retry Settings
Controls the number of times a schedule will try to run if it fails to start and the retry
period is the interval between those retries.
68
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client for Macintosh
– Schedule Log
Controls where the log for schedule backups is kept and how often entries in the log
are pruned. The recommended location is the default, and the recommended prune
time is seven days.
– Schedule Command
Controls commands that can be initiated before and after a scheduled backup. Such
commands might be to suspend a virtual guest or an application and then resume after
the backup is finished. If you want the backup to wait till the command is finished,
select the “Wait for the command to complete” option to cause the scheduled backup to
wait for a return code of 0 from the command that is executed before the backup
proceeds. The recommended setting is blank, unless you need to run a command.
– The “Prevent the following Administrator defined Commands from executing” option
allows the local administrator to prevent scheduled backups, operating system
commands, and even the pre- and post-scheduled commands from running on that
machine. The recommended setting is to leave these cleared unless there is a specific
reason to enable them.

Backup and restore
In this chapter, we discuss the types of backups that IBM Tivoli Storage Manager can
perform, how to perform a backup of your data, and how to restore that data back to your
machine.

71
4.1 Types of backups
Tivoli Storage Manager handles all backup needs through incremental and selective backups.
Incremental backups are the main backups that Tivoli Storage Manager performs and are the
basis for the incremental forever methodology that is used by Tivoli Storage Manager. The
types of incremental backups are full incremental, partial incremental, and
incremental-by-data backups.
4.1.1 Full incremental backup
A full incremental backup is the default backup that Tivoli Storage Manager performs. With a
full incremental backup, Tivoli Storage Manager scans all files on a machine that have not
been excluded, compares the files to the last version held within Tivoli Storage Manager, and
sends any files that have been modified to the Tivoli Storage Manager server. If this is the first
time a backup is performed on a machine, Tivoli Storage Manager sends all files to the Tivoli
Storage Manager server except those that have been excluded.
4.1.2 Incremental-by-data backup
An incremental-by-data backup scans all of the files on a machine that are not excluded and
compares their last modified date against the last version held within Tivoli Storage Manager.
When an incremental-by-data backup is performed, Tivoli Storage Manager only sends the
new file to the Tivoli Storage Manager server. It does not remove any deleted files or expired
files and does not send files to a new management class if the management class has
changed since the last full incremental backup.
4.1.3 Selective backup
A selective backup will back up all selected files regardless of modification. This type of
backup is also referred to as always backup, because it does not pay attention to the previous
backup and always sends a copy of the files to the server. When using a selective backup,
special attention must be paid to the files that are backed up because, in certain cases, the
selective backup can cause an older version of a file to become the latest version that is
backed up. We recommend against using a selective backup unless there is a business
reason.
4.2 Performing a backup
The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client can perform backups through several
different methods through the GUI, command-line interface (CLI), Web-based GUI, and
through scheduled backups on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. In this section, we cover
how to perform backups through the GUI because that is our recommended method of
performing a manual backup. If you want to understand how to schedule backups through the
Tivoli Storage Manager server, refer to Tivoli Storage Manager Server Administration
Reference or Tivoli Storage Manager Administrations Guide.

4.3 Performing a restore
The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client can perform restores through several
different methods, including the GUI, the command-line interface (CLI), and the Web-based
interface.
In this section, we cover how to perform restores through the GUI, because that method is our
recommended method of performing restores. If you want to perform a restore using the
Web-based interface, the process is the same as restoring through the GUI, except that you
access the interface using the Web browser, such as:
http://hostname:1581
In the Web address, 1581 is the default Web port.
To restore a machine using the GUI, follow these steps:
1. Open a finder window. Click the Applications link within the sidebar of the finder window.
Note: You might have your applications already set as the default location to open in a
new finder window.
2. Navigate to the Tivoli Storage Manager folder, and double-click it. Three icons display
