Part I - Joint bilingual publication “The Making of Citizens in
Europe and North Africa”
The first part of the focus group meeting will be dedicated to the
publication which was defined to be the core project of the focus group:
A publication on Citizenship Education in Europe and North Africa
(online and print). We will present the current state of the project (a
website with country profiles) and collect your comments and ideas.
Furthermore, we will discuss the relations between Arts, Culture and
Citizenship Education as one of the further chapters of the planned
publication will be dedicated to this topic.

Project presentations / Good practice examples by
“Dawar” presented by Dalia Assem, Oreed for citizenship education
in Egypt (Egypt)
“Dawar” is the first Egyptian model for citizenship education at Egyptian
universities using art as a tool for awareness. The project a living proof
of how interdependent world can be of used and cooperations have a
big positive impact on prevailing peaceful values and ideas.
“Mahatat for Contemporary Art” presented by Reem Khedr (Egypt)
Mahatat is a multi-cultural mobile art initiative envisioning a society in
which contemporary art is an accessible and visible part in everyday life
and in public space, working toward the accessibility and the
decentralization of contemporary art by developing art in public space
and community art projects all over the country.

Part II – Preparation NECE Conference 2015
“Them and Us: Citizenship Education in an Interdependent World”
The NECE Conference, which will be held in Thessaloniki, Greece from
22-24 October 2015, will focus on the perception of the cultural, social
and ethnic “other” as an essential dimension of societies and cultures.

By raising questions of how and on what level social demarcation lines
(who belongs when to the “we group”, who belongs when to “the
others”) are currently drawn within Europe and in the interaction with its
southern and eastern neighbours, the conference will follow topic
threads: I. The West and the Arab World/Middle East, II. Europe in
times of crisis and III. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
Focussing on the aspect “The West and the Arab World/Middle East”,
we will discuss general reflections and practical approaches in CE to
collect ideas for the upcoming conference. Finally, we will design panels
and workshops for the conference.
