Call to Order
The meeting was called to order without a quorum at 2:15 by committee chair Cindy
Hicks.
II.
Social Sciences Presentation
Diana Immisch commented that the library consultation noted on the Dean’s Checklist
for Geography 5 was not necessary because this is not a new course.
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
Cindy Hicks noted that at some point ECD will need to update their textbooks. The dates
are getting a bit old.
ECD 65, Administration, 3 units
Updated course outline. No changes suggested.
ECD 68, Program Supervision, 3 units
Updated course outline.
Needed:
• Correct numbering on page 15.
ECD 83, Adult Supervision, 2 units
Updated course outline. No changes suggested.
GEOGRAPHY
Geography 5, World Regional Geography, 3 units
It was noted that because this course has already been approved for Distance
Education, the Curriculum Committee does not need to address a request for DE. The
DECSC is reviewing the change in Delivery Plan. Below the catalog description
changes have also been made.
Needed:
• Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: add “e. Final Examination.”

Update textbook dates.
HISTORY
History 5, Critical Thinking in History, 3 units
Revised to meet American Cultures requirement at course level. A cover memo and
annotated bibliography from 2002 were distributed. At that time the subcommittee
approved the course at the section level. Please review the handouts before the vote
on November 9. At that meeting, we will also talk about whether the any of the
forms need to be revised to be more appropriate for courses being presented at the
outline, rather than the section, level.
It was suggested that past American Cultures proposals might be posted on the web
or put on reserve in the library to serve as a research tool for instructors developing
proposals. Cindy will review what is available.
Discussion on the examples given as part of the Course Content and how to make it
clear that they are examples, not a mandated part of the outline, perhaps by moving
them down a level in the outline format. It was suggested that the outline needs to be
generic enough to accommodate topical and current illustrations of concepts.
It was also noted that content needs to be added to support the composition skills
listed in Expected Outcomes.
Patricia Shannon asked why the course is not being submitted for the IGETC Critical
Thinking area. Cindy Hicks thinks it was submitted in the past and rejected, perhaps
because it is not an English class. Patricia suggested finding out why it was rejected
and deciding whether the discipline wants to address the reasons in this outline and
resubmit. NOTE: Patricia’s research indicates the course was rejected for IGETC
because it does not have an English 1A prerequisite.
Needed:
• Clarify the examples in Course Content
• Add content to support the composition skills listed in Expected Outcomes.
• Rewrite Typical Assignments as though addressing the student.
History 20, The African-American Experience in U.S. History Through
Reconstruction, 3 units
Title change from African-American History Through Reconstruction. The course
has been rewritten for resubmission to the CSU-GE American Institutions area.
Articulation Form 3 was submitted and approved; Forms 1 and 4 are not necessary.
Needed:
• Rewrite Typical Assignments as though addressing the student. Be specific.
• Add a final examination to Methods of Evaluating Student Progress.
• Update textbook dates.
