Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:10 by committee chair Norberto Ruiz.
II.
Minutes of October 18, 2005
MSC (Novak/Chun) that the minutes of October 18, 2005, be approved as presented.
III.
Response from Music Discipline on Program Changes
MUSIC
Gene Groppetti presented. A revised packet was distributed.
Associate in Arts Degree, Music
The discipline has rewritten the major, which now contains 30 units. The Practicum
Option has been replaced with an Applied Option.
Needed:
• Correct the Music Practicum Option in the Spring semester of the Freshman year
to read “Applied Option.”
Jane Church reported that Jo Service, the Articulation Specialist at CSU, agrees that
limiting applied music units on the CSU is our restriction. We can remove it if we
wish.
MUSL 4, Jazz Styles, 3 units
Needed:
• Check “Arts” in Area 3 of Articulation Form #5.
IV.
Conclude Humanities Presentation (Patricia Shannon)
HUMANITIES
Patricia Shannon answered Bill McDonald’s concerns to the proposal by restating the
discipline’s vision for the program. Bill replied that he understands the purpose of the
restructuring, but he thinks that the higher numbered courses are going to be hard to fill.
Curriculum Committee

Patricia also reported that LPC requested that Chabot separate its program from LPC’s by
assigning a new numbering series, rather than revising existing courses. It is possible that
this might create a situation in which a student could receive double credit for a course,
for example Humanities 10 at LPC and Humanities 65 at Chabot. Ron Taylor stated that
this might not be worth worrying about. Bill McDonald agreed, saying that it would be
no different than a student transferring in from another district and getting credit for a
similar class.
HUMN 1, Philosophy—The Sciences—Epic Poetry, 3 units
HUMN 3, Film—Drama—Music—Visual Art—Lyric Poetry, 3 units
HUMN 35, Greek Tragedy, 3 units
HUMN 40, Introduction to Opera, 1-3 units
HUMN 45, Narrative Film Music, 4 units
The discipline is requesting that these courses be removed from the catalog. There
were no suggestions to the contrary.
HUMN 50, The Artful Life, 3 units
New course. Articulation forms #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 submitted and approved.
HUMN 65, The American Style, 3 units
Number changed from HUMN 10. Updated formatting. Articulation form #5
submitted and approved. No changes suggested.
HUMN 72, Contemporary Humanities, 3 units
Number changed from HUMN 7. Updated formatting. Jane suggested submitting
the course for IGETC.
Needed:
• Submit Articulation form #5.
HUMN 75, Religion in Contemporary Culture, 3 units
Number changed from HUMN 30. Updated formatting. No changes suggested.
AA Degree, Humanities (General)
The degree has been rewritten, reducing the units from 36 to 27.
Needed:
• Rationale for high-unit major.
• Remove “Transfer Program and” from Title
PHILOSOPHY
PHIL 50, God, Nature, Human Nature, 3 units
Number changed from PHIL 1. Updated formatting.
Curriculum Committee
10-25-05, page 3
Needed:
• Rewrite Expected Outcomes introductory statement to read, “Upon
completion of the course, the student should be able to:”
• Rewrite Expected Outcomes #1 to read, “read, analyze, and discuss major
philosophical statements about humans…”
• Rewrite Expected Outcomes #2 in a similar style.
RELIGIOUS STUDIES
RELS 50, Religions of the World, 3 units
Number changed from RELS 1. Updated formatting.
Patricia Shannon explained that in the academic study of religion, there are two clear
ways to present the information to the student: Historical or thematic. An instructor
must offer and adhere to one or the other. This outline is an attempt to show the two
patterns. There was discussion on whether this is two different courses or two
different methodologies.
Jane feels that the proposed outline will cause confusion in articulating the course.
Ron thinks that in a literal sense we are talking about methods of presentation. He
suggested making the Expected Outcomes all one list and moving the information
about approach to the Methods of Presentation section.
Needed:
• Rewrite the outline based on the discussion above.
RELS 64, Nature of Islam, 3 units
Number changed from RELS 11. Updated formatting and textbook dates. No
changes suggested.
RELS 65, Religions of Asia, 3 units
Number changed from RELS 30. Updated formatting and textbook dates. No
changes suggested.
RELS 72, Contemporary Issues in Islam, 3 units
Number changed from RELS 12. Updated formatting and textbook dates. No
changes suggested.
AA Degree, International Studies
The page was revised to reflect numbering changes of some of the Arts and
Humanities courses. It was noted that the total unit numbers published in the catalog
are incorrect. [NOTE: The page has been sent to the Social Science Division for
review.]
Curriculum Committee

ART
Art 6, Museum Studies, 4.5 units
Diane Zuliani asked whether the committee had any further questions. She reported
that she did search for models to this class. Theater Arts students who participate in a
production must take two, 3-unit courses. Theater Arts instructor Rachel LePell sees
the Spring Art Show as being similar in scope to a theatrical presentation.
Diane would like the committee to vote on the course the way it was presented, as 2
hours lecture, 4 hours laboratory for 4.5 units. It was noted that if the committee
does not approve the course as written, Diane would be allowed to submit an
alternative plan for vote.
The committee will vote on the Arts and Humanities packet at the next meeting.
V.
Social Sciences Presentation
Marge Maloney introduced faculty members Barbara Ogman, Hilal Ozdemir, and Kathy
Kelley.
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
Patricia Shannon commented on the incoherence of our numbering system, and
pointed out that having ECD 51 and 62 as prerequisites to ECD 40 seems illogical.
Kathy Kelley agreed, but stated that the discipline also has licensing considerations
that preclude a complete renumbering. She stated that there was no available number
above 51 and 62 that could be used for this course.
There was further discussion on the differences in numbering series and what is a
“college level” course as opposed to a “vocational course.” Jane pointed out that all
courses listed on the CSU Transfer List are Baccalaureate-level. She summarized the
differences between transfer and articulation.
Patricia Shannon asked that the subject of renumbering be tabled until Spring
semester.
Kathy Kelley reported that CSU is developing a major in Early Childhood
Development, and the discipline is working with them and the Community College
Consortium. Chabot is working on a certificate that will be accepted at CSU,
allowing holders to enter the program as upper division students.
ECD 40, Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning, 3 units
New course. Will be added to the ECD AA degree as an option. Articulation forms
#1, 2, and 3 submitted and approved.
Discussion on textbook dates yielded the opinion that outlines should contain
textbook dates only.
Bill McDonald asked whether the course meets the guidelines for inclusion in Area D
of Chabot’s graduation requirements. Kathy Kelley stated that she views the course

as developmental psychology. Patricia Shannon agreed. Consensus was that the
request should be submitted as presented.
Needed:
• Strike “or latest edition” from textbook dates.
• Content Review form: Adjust numbering. Complete Skill #1.
ECD 59, Literacy in Early Childhood, 3 units
New course. Will be added to the ECD AA degree as an option. Articulation form
#2 submitted and approved.
The committee suggested a change to the Catalog Description.
Needed:
• Revise Abbreviated Course Description and Catalog Description to read,
“This course will enhance the early literacy outcomes…”
• Strike “or latest edition” from textbook dates.
• Content Review form: Complete Skill #2.
ECD 87, Quality Environments for Infants/Toddlers, 3 units
Hours changed from 40 hours lecture and 14 hours Work Experience to 3 hours
lecture. A change to Methods of Evaluating Student Progress item d. was suggested.
Bill commented that six out of ten skills on the Content Review Form are rated
“critical.” He said that this degree of importance usually results in a prerequisite
rather than an advisory. Barbara Ogman replied that this is really a stand-alone class.
She said that students could benefit from the class without having a firm grounding
in theory. She will submit a revised Content Review Form.
Needed:
• Revise Methods of Evaluating Student Progress item d. to read, “Infant
toddlers environmental rating scale assessment assignment”
• Strike “or latest edition” from textbook dates.
• Submit a revised Content Review form based on discussion above.
ECD 88, Early Childhood Environments, .5 unit
New course. While this is also a stand-alone course, it is required by other ECD
programs in the country. Articulation form #2 submitted and approved.
Needed:
• Strike “or latest edition” from textbook dates.
AA Degree, Early Childhood Development
Edna Danaher asked why the degree is not being offered as an Associate in Science
degree. Ron added that the discipline must submit a rationale for high-unit major.
Needed:
• Submit a rationale for high-unit major.
Curriculum Committee
10-25-05, page 6
Bill commended the discipline for having their Certificates lead into their
AA Degree.
GEOGRAPHY
GEOG 2, Cultural Geography, 3 units
Updated outline and formatting changes. There was discussion about the amount of
detail included in the outline and whether it is excessive.
Needed:
• Correct numbering in Course Content
• Rewrite Methods of Evaluating Student Progress section b. to read, “oral or
online visual/audio presentation(s)…”
• Strike “or latest edition” from textbook dates.
At 4:00 Norberto asked for a motion to continue the meeting. MSC
(McDonald/Shannon) to extend the meeting for 15 minutes minutes.
GEOG 12, Geography of California, 3 units
Updated outline and formatting changes.
Needed:
• Strike “or latest edition” from textbook dates.
HISTORY
Request to change rubric from HIST to HIS.
Lupe Ortiz reported that this seemed to be the easiest way to resolve differences
between the program at Chabot and the program at LPC. The change would affect all
courses in the History program.
HIS 22, Mexican American History and Culture, 3 units
Title changed from Mexican American History in the Development of U.S. History
from Pre-Columbian Period to the Present. Revised to meet CSU’s Executive Order
#405 to meet requirements in United States History, Constitution and American
Ideals as part of the course. Articulation form #3 submitted and approved.
Needed:
• Check “Title Change” and “Rubric Change” on the Statement of Rationale.
• Use measurable verbs in Expected Outcomes numbers 9, 13, 15, 17, and 18.
• Strike “or latest edition” from textbook dates.
• Submit a new program page for the AA Degree, Spanish.

SOCIOLOGY
AA Degree, Sociology (Emphasis in Gerontology)
Certificate of Completion, Sociology (Emphasis in Gerontology)
The discipline is requesting that these programs be removed from catalog. There
were no suggestions to the contrary.
VI.
Good of the Order
Patricia Shannon asked why the Arts and Humanities vote was being delayed. Norberto
replied that he delayed the vote so that the Social Sciences Division could make their
presentation.
Jan Novak asked whether the Distance Education proposals should be included in the
Applied Technology and Business packet. They should.
Patricia Shannon requested that the format for textbook dates be clarified and the
information inserted in the Handbook.
