MSC (Buti/Ogman) to approve the minutes of September 14, 2010, as modified. 3. New Courses MINOR CHANGES (Consent or FYI changes) Liberal Arts, AA Degree Psychology-Counseling 10, Career and Educational Planning, 2 units Art History 7, Multicultural History of American Art, 3 units Wayne noted that for future reference, when submitting a course for articulation it is wise to include textbooks that encompass the breadth of the class. Jane noted that she is currently enrolled in this class, and no textbook is being used. There was discussion about the disconnect between the outline and the way the course is being taught. Wayne will look in best practices for course outlines of record to see whether this issue is addressed. Minor changes were approved by consent contingent upon changes being made as noted on master packet and returned to the division. MAJOR CHANGES There was discussion on whether the following course belongs in the major changes category. It is being treated as a “new” course because it was deleted in the last curriculum cycle, but there have been few changes to the course outline. However, we have no category for “reinstated” courses. Library Studies 1, Library Skills for an Information Society, 1 unit Pedro Reynoso presented. Needed: • Change date to Fall 2011 • Change World Wide Web/WWW to “internet” throughout outline and Abbreviated Course Description. • Remove references to “classroom-based.” • Correct punctuation in Expected Outcomes and Course Content Curriculum Committee 9-21-10, Page 2 • • Change Methods of Presentation 4. to read, “…(i.e., films, online videos, digital archives)” In Typical Assignments, remove “You are to” from the beginning of sections a, b, e, f, and g. MSC (Shannon/Ogman) to accept the course as corrected. Jane will submit the course for UC Transfer in November. Early Childhood Development 56, Child Growth and Development, 3 units Barbara Ogman presented. She explained that the Curriculum Alignment Project requires a course that spans the development of a child from birth through adolescence. This course is a revision to ECD 51, which serves as a prerequisite to many of the ECD courses. It has been given a new number because the revisions are extensive. ECD 51 will be removed from the catalog, and replaced by ECD56 in courses and programs. A similar course, ECD 52, will remain in the catalog. Needed: • Library consultation • Update outlines and program pages as necessary and submit as part of the Social Sciences presentation. • Remove “Aligned to CAP.” from Abbreviated Course Description.” MSC (Buti/Warda) to approve ECD 56 with changes noted. 4. Course Repetition Wayne distributed Title 5 sections 55040 and 55041 on Course Repetition. There was lengthy discussion on which courses have limits placed on their repeatability, and ways that colleges try to circumvent those restrictions. Patricia Shannon pointed out that we need to adhere to the Title 5 regulations so that we do not expend our resources offering courses for which we do not receive apportionment. She added that an audit appears to be imminent. There was discussion on focusing on the State’s goals of Basic Skills and Transfer Education at the expense of the college’s goal of Lifelong Learning. Christine reported that the Foreign Language faculty are unhappy with the fact that the state lumps all language classes together rather than noting a difference between their transfer-level courses and conversational courses. Patricia Shannon suggested working through the college and state Academic Senates, legislators, and participating in statewide committees to effect the change. 5. Good of the Order Jane commented on how the course numbering system has changed over the years, and the fact that you can no longer identify a CTE class by its number. Ernesto remembers that the term a course would be offered used to be included in the catalog, and that the information was helpful for students trying to plan their schedules. Jane has noticed that there is no consistency within disciplines on how classes are graded (grade only; grade or P/NP; P/NP only), and suggested that the committee come up with some guidelines. Patricia Shannon stated that grading options are determined by faculty (per Title 5). Wayne will see what information he can find on the subject. Curriculum Committee 9-21-10, Page 3 The committee wished Kaaren a happy birthday [Thank you for the flowers. kk]. 8. Next Meeting: September 28, 2010, in Room 405 9.
