Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. by committee chair Norberto Ruiz. II. Minutes of November 28, 2006 Jan Novak commented that she did not second the motion to approve the minutes; she was not present at the meeting. (Review of the notes showed that Connie Telles seconded the motion.) Jane Church reported that Articulation Forms 4 and 5 were withdrawn from consideration for PHED 59. She also asked that the minutes show that PHED 59 and 62 will be submitted for inclusion on the CSU-GE list as lecture courses. MSC (Telles/Novak) to approve the Minutes of November 28, 2006, as amended. III. Dental Hygiene/Health/PE/Presentation DENTAL HYGIENE JoAnn Galliano presented. A packet containing edits and requested rationales was distributed. It was noted that Abbreviated Course Descriptions are not included on the rationales. JoAnn will add a note in the final packet stating that there are no changes to the Abbreviated Course Descriptions currently in effect. DHYG 61, Head and Neck Anatomy, 2 units Revised at the request of the Program Review team to replace the term “embryology” with “anatomy.” Typical Assignment 1c. has been corrected to read “Develop a local anesthesia chart.” DHYG 74B, Dental Radiography II, 1.5 units Revised to include Digital Radiography. The abbreviation RDH (Registered Dental Hygienist) has been spelled out. . DHYG 54, Pharmacology, 2 units Course content has been revised to reflect how the course is being taught. Typical assignments have been revised. DHYG 57, Expanded Functions for the Dental Hygienist, 2 units Course content has been revised based on a change in the allowable duties for dental hygienists. Typical Assignment 1.c. has been rewritten. Curriculum Committee 12-5-06, page 2 DHYG 60, Dental Anatomy and Morphology, 1.5 units It was noted that the Rationale is for DHYG 60A. It will be corrected in the final packet. Other changes were minor edits to Expected Outcomes. DHYG 74A, Dental Radiography I, 3 units Updated textbook. DHYG 80B, Advanced Clinical Topics, 1 unit Expected Outcomes have been revised. DHYG 81A, Clinical Practice I, 4 units Prerequisite Skills for DHYG 69B have been reinstated to correct an accidental omission in last year’s update of the course. Typical Assignments have been expanded. Needed: • In Typical Assignments a., correct “pedo” to read “pediatric.” Add periods to the ends of the assignments. • Remove the heading line between Typical Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress. DHYG 81B, Clinical Practice II, 5 units Prerequisite Skills for DHYG 69B have been reinstated to correct an accidental omission in last year’s update of the course. Typical Assignments have been expanded. Jan noted that some of the Expected Outcomes are written identically to corresponding Prerequisite Skills. JoAnn replied that the Accrediting Board wants certain elements repeated in each class. She added that while incremental growth in skills is an expectation, it is hard to express in writing because individual students progress at different rates. DHYG 82A, Clinical Experience Seminar I, 1 unit Edits to Course Content, Typical Assignments, and Textbooks. JoAnn noted that the Corequisite Skills section was included in error; it will be removed in the final packet. DHYG 82B, Clinical Experience Seminar II, 2 units Course content revised to remove content taught in another class and to add material needed to meet new accreditation guidelines. JoAnn told the committee that the discipline has tried to make all necessary changes in preparation for their self-study next year and the accreditation visit the following year. MSC (Shannon/Church) to accept the Dental Hygiene packet as presented. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Dale Wagoner reported that the outlines for PHED 59 and 62 have been corrected per the minutes of November 28. Revised outlines will be included in the final packet. Curriculum Committee 12-5-06, page 3 Physical Education, AA Degree A revised program page was presented. Needed: • Remove references to “Transfer Program” Physical Education, AS Degree A revised program page was presented. No changes were suggested. Fitness Instructor, Certificate of Completion Needed: • Correct total to read “14 ½ - 15.” Fitness Instructor, Certificate of Achievement Needed: • Move Health 1 or PHED 18 to Spring semester to balance student load It was noted that the problem of determining whether students have accomplished the footnoted activity requirement (as discussed in the November 28 minutes) has not been addressed for the certificates. Also, there is confusion on whether the footnote refers only to the Certificate of Completion or to both certificates. [Note: An annotated copy of these pages was sent to Dale Wagoner on December 6 with a request that he address these questions and send a response to Norberto and Kaaren by Friday, December 8.] IV. Math/Science Presentation Milton Rube presented. MATHEMATICS The discipline has made changes to a number of Mathematics courses in order to qualify them as TCSU courses in the new CSU transfer program. Changes have been made in the Course Content and Expected Outcomes sections to make the courses more consistent with the course descriptors of the transfer program, without altering the way our courses are being taught. Some prerequisites and advisories have been identified in the Catalog Description using both Course Number and Title to meet TCSU requirements [Note that this is a departure from our usual practice of using Course Number only.] In answer to a question, Milton explained that TCSU incorporates only lower-division courses. He added that LPC is considering a similar revision. The following courses have been revised: Mathematics 1, Calculus I, 5 units Mathematics 2, Calculus II, 5 units Mathematics 3, Multivariable Calculus, 5 units Mathematics 4, Elementary Differential Equations, 3 units Mathematics 6, Elementary Linear Algebra, 3 units Jane initiated a conversation about LPC courses meeting prerequisites for Chabot courses. She asked how we determine that LPC courses listed in Banner as meeting the prerequisite meet our requirements. Curriculum Committee 12-5-06, page 4 Jane also noted that since the colleges no longer use the same Rubric for Math, it might be time to revisit the “0-1 laboratory hours” notation in the Catalog Description. Ron suggested that the discipline discuss the topic, stating that this may be the only way to capture laboratory hours now that we can no longer use 500 courses. MSC (Novak/McLean) to approve the Mathematics submission as presented. V. AA GE English 1A Clara reported on work being done in the English discipline to determine what courses will satisfy the English GE requirement based on changes being discussed at the State level. Discussion centered on English 1A, 52A and 70, their prerequisites and advisories, and how each fits in with the new directives. The discipline was under the impression that the courses are equivalent, which may not be the case. Clara reported that existing thinking in the discipline would be to remove English 52A and English 70 from Area A1. That action might affect the Retail Management and Administrative Assistant AS Degrees. Kaaren Krueg suggested that changing the advisories to prerequisites might solve the problem. Ron replied that we should find out what the original intent was before making that recommendation. Clara reported that there is a subcommittee working on that question. Ron Taylor asked Norberto to research the topic for District Curriculum Council. Norberto stated that we need a recommendation on how we should respond to the state requirement that will go into effect in Fall 2009. We need to work on this in Spring so that proposals may be acted on next year. VI. FIRE TECHNOLOGY Bob Buell presented. Fire Technology 89, Firefighter-1 Academy Introduction, ½ unit Changes title from Firefighter-1 Academy Evaluation. Removes Health 61 from the prerequisite. AS Degree, Fire Technology Changes title of Fire Technology 89 to Firefighter-1 Academy Introduction. A rationale for the high-unit major stated that required units are at the recommendation of the Advisory Board. Jane questioned how Health 81 can be a prerequisite to entry into the Academy if it is offered in the same semester. Bob distributed revised pages for the AA Degree and Certificate of Achievement. There was discussion on why this is an AA Degree, rather than AS or AA/AS. Bob replied that he is not opposed to having it as AA/AS; he added that the discipline favored the AA because it included a critical thinking component. MSC (Novak/Shannon) to approve the Fire Technology packet as amended. Curriculum Committee 12-5-06, page 5 VII. Good of the Order: • Jane reported that she did present a draft resolution regarding reciprocity agreements and GE requirements to Senate on November 30, and it was accepted. She is not sure where LPC is on this. • Jane reported that she has noticed that the numbers and rubrics are the same for the LPC and Chabot French and Spanish classes but the course outlines are quite different, Chabot's being more recently revised. She added that the classes are used differently, which is very problematic for our students. She has discussed this with the Foreign Language instructors, but feels the Curriculum Committee needs to be made aware of this dilemma. After lengthy discussion on ways to resolve the differences, Patricia moved that Norberto ask Senate for a clarification on the relationship between the College Curriculum Committee dictating curriculum revision or evaluation vs. overstepping the boundary governing academic freedom. The motion died for lack of a second. • Jan asked that reps announce the December 12 college hour Distance Ed Committee meeting on at this week’s division meetings. • Norberto reported that last Thursday the Faculty Senate approved AS GE Proposal A (shown below). The Senate at LPC has also approved it. Area Title 5 Area D. D. 1. D. 2. A. C. B. E. E. The discipline may require a specific course or allow students to choose from a list of courses or GE area(s). Any courses chosen to satisfy this area must be chosen from the areas defined by Title 5 and must be chosen from the list of courses approved by the college curriculum committee as area GE courses. Norberto reported that Curriculum Chairs and Senate Presidents are developing a form for submitting courses to be placed in the Program-Based GE area. The Automotive programs at both colleges will pilot the procedure in Spring. Disciplines will recommend courses for this area as part of next year’s curriculum process, and the new requirement will go into effect in Fall 2008. Curriculum Committee 12-5-06, page 6 VIII. IX. Next Meeting: Norberto will email the committee with information on whether remaining business requires a meeting on December 12 or can be finalized via email vote. The meeting was adjourned at 3:50 p.m. kk 12/7/06 c:\documents\word\curric\2006-2007\12-5-06.min.doc
