II. Call to Order The meeting was called to order without a quorum at 2:10 p.m. by committee chair Patricia Shannon. Good of the Order CurricUNET. Patricia reported that CurricUNET can be purchased for $60,000 plus $10,000 per year. The district seems interested in the product. Jim Matthews added that the system is overloaded. He said that Berkeley City College completed input four months ago and has not gotten anything back. Art History 51, Museum Studies. Jane Church has talked with UC, who assured her that the course would be evaluated on content, not repeatability. District Curriculum Council. Patricia reported on DCC. She stated that there will be increasing pressure from the Chancellor’s Office on bringing the curriculum of the two colleges into closer alignment. She said that although the Chancellor understands that there will never be perfect alignment; the degree of misalignment that is permissible is unclear at this time. She added that because we have shared transcripts, we may have to put up with or resolve differences such as mathematics certification and different courses that fulfill the American Cultures requirement. Patricia added that our Board and our students view us as sister colleges. GE Reciprocity. Jane commented on a study she did on Advanced Placement, stating that there is no uniformity among the 110 community colleges. She stated that Region 4 made a huge step forward when we agreed to GE Reciprocity. Edna Danaher asked whether Certificates of Proficiency containing 12-17 units have been forwarded to the state for approval as Certificates of Achievement. She added that Certificates of Proficiency will not appear on transcripts. Gene Groppetti replied that at the time these were created, the discussion centered on what to call the old Certificates of Completion rather than on state submission. Patricia reported that the Engineering Associate in Science degree has been approved by the state. A quorum having been achieved, the committee moved on to action items. III. Approval of Minutes of December 2, 2008 MSC (Matthews/Victoria) to accept the minutes of December 2, 2008, as presented. Curriculum Committee 12-9-08, page 2 IV. Arts and Humanities Presentation FILM Linda Rhodes presented. Gene asked how many units are now in the FILM rubric, stating that if there are more than 12 we may have to apply to the state as a program, since we have exceeded the number of units that can be approved as stand-alone. Linda replied that the discipline plans to present a program to the committee in Spring semester. There was discussion on the request for a 99 number for one of the courses. This is an experimental number that cannot be applied to a degree. Linda agreed that she had misunderstood the numbering system and said that she would assign a different number to the course. Film 9, Film Production Colloquia, 1 unit New course. Transfer-Baccalaureate request: CSU Transfer List. Needed: Add “1 unit” to the Catalog Description. Add a heading to the second page. Add a Library Consultation form. Film 14, Film Pre-Production, 3 units New course. Transfer-Baccalaureate requests: AA/AS Area C, CSU Transfer, UC Transfer. There was discussion on whether this course would be offered only in Distance Education format. It will not. Needed: On the DE Course Proposal Form, check the Online box. Film 89, Special Studies in Film, .5 – 5 units New course. Discussion revealed that the instructor had misunderstood the use of 99 numbers. A new number will be selected and included in the final packet so that the course may be included in the college catalog. Gene explained the affect of variable unit courses on productivity, stating that many students will take the minimum number of units, generating low FTES numbers and making the ratio of FTES and percent of instructor load unbalanced. He suggested giving the course a fixed unit value. Patricia suggested a consultation between Linda Rhodes and Gary Carter to determine how to structure the course to make it successful. Curriculum Committee 12-9-08, page 3 Needed: Select new course number. Change unit value as determine by faculty member and dean. Spell out “Digital Video (DV)” in Abbreviated Course Description and Catalog Description. Film 50, Beginning Film Production, 3 units Film 60, Documentary Film, 3 units No changes to outlines. Transfer-Baccalaureate requests for AA/AS, Area C, and CSU GE, Area C1. This is a resubmission to UC. Jane noted that the same courses were rejected last year by CSU. If they come back again this year she suggests revising the outlines. Request to remove Film 4901, Beginning Film Production, “from the catalog.” This is not a catalog course. The request should be done in the form of a Change Order to deactivate the course in Banner. Patricia explained how to determine prerequisite skills for this course: Do the content review pages, and then list the most important outcomes identified on those pages in the Prerequisite Skills Section, eliminating redundancies.
