Sociology TMC proposal
Jane thinks that we will have AA-Ts from Communication Studies and Sociology. In
answer to a question about major preparation, Jane stated that the recent email discussion
was really about the elimination of local requirements.
5.

Susan Tong presented. She reported that in developing the AA-T, emphasis was placed
on theory and methodology.
Sociology, Associate in Arts – Transfer (AA-T)
Sociology 5, Introduction to Social Research Methods, 3 units
Patricia initiated a discussion on whether the college would be better served, in the
areas of FTEF and enrollment, by a generic research course that could cover
Psychology and Anthropology as well as Sociology. Susan replied that the division
had already had that discussion and had decided to go with a Sociology-focused
course. Jane suggested looking at the C-ID Descriptors of the various research
courses.
Sociology 6, Introduction to Gender, 3 units
Discussion included:
• Formatting suggestions (Kaaren gave the authors her notes on Tech review.)

Collapsing the content to give instructors more opportunity to focus their
instruction.

contingent upon corrections as noted. Please make corrections by next week and send
them to Jane and Kaaren.
Jane applauded the division for stepping up and completing the process.

Presentation of Communication Studies TMC
Christine Warda presented. She commented on how well the courses in the AA-T fit
with Chabot’s graduation requirements.
Communication Studies, Associate in Arts – Transfer (AA-T)
Communication Studies 50, Introduction to Communication Studies, 3 units
There was discussion on whether this course should be moved from Area B to
Required Core. It was agreed that it should, and Jane stated that she had received
word from Stephanie Low that having more than one course in the Core was OK.
Discussion on whether “world view” (Expected Outcome #8) is adequately
represented in the rest of the outline. Suggested to add to Typical Assignments.
Communication Studies 6, Introduction to Performance Studies, 3 units
Course has been revised to make it more acceptable for CSU-GE articulation.
Patricia suggested reordering the Outcomes to put “theory” at the top. Add the word
“theory” to one of the Outcomes. Make one of the Assignments grounded in theory.
MSC (Shannon/Ogman) to accept the Communication Studies AA-T, COMM 6 and
COMM 50 contingent upon corrections as noted. Please make corrections by next
week and send them to Jane and Kaaren.
7.

Curriculum Process: from Proposal to Class Schedule
Jane commented that she has seen courses listed in the Class Schedule that have not
come through the Curriculum Committee. She questioned whether the Committee is
responsible for what is in the Class Schedule, and if so, what are we going to do to
ensure accuracy of listings? Patricia thinks that we are responsible. Begoña asked what
the consequences would be if we were audited. The Title 5 timeline for review of course
outlines was also mentioned, as well as the approval process for PE activity courses.
