Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by the chair, Jane Church. Jane added Automotive Technology to the agenda. She also asked that the committee help get the TMCs finalized. 2. Minutes of March 22, 2011 Tabled. 3. Automotive Technology Tom Clark presented. ATEC 99.02 ATEC 91 Hybrid Diagnosis and Alternate Fuels Technology, 2 units Hybrid Diagnosis and Alternate Fuels Technology, 2 units (to be implemented Fall 2012) MSC (Warda/Cirera-Perez) to accept these courses. Jane expressed thanks for Kurt Shadbolt’s efforts in taking on this project, and his enthusiasm and willingness to work with the Curriculum Committee to make it happen. 4. Sociology TMC proposal Jane thinks that we will have AA-Ts from Communication Studies and Sociology. In answer to a question about major preparation, Jane stated that the recent email discussion was really about the elimination of local requirements. 5. Presentation of Sociology TMC Susan Tong presented. She reported that in developing the AA-T, emphasis was placed on theory and methodology. Sociology, Associate in Arts – Transfer (AA-T) Sociology 5, Introduction to Social Research Methods, 3 units Patricia initiated a discussion on whether the college would be better served, in the areas of FTEF and enrollment, by a generic research course that could cover Psychology and Anthropology as well as Sociology. Susan replied that the division had already had that discussion and had decided to go with a Sociology-focused course. Jane suggested looking at the C-ID Descriptors of the various research courses. Sociology 6, Introduction to Gender, 3 units Discussion included: • Formatting suggestions (Kaaren gave the authors her notes on Tech review.) Curriculum Committee 4-26-11, Page 2 • • Christine noted that “transgender” was not included. Collapsing the content to give instructors more opportunity to focus their instruction. MSC (Ogman/Victoria) to accept the Sociology AA-T, SOCI 5 and SOCI 6 contingent upon corrections as noted. Please make corrections by next week and send them to Jane and Kaaren. Jane applauded the division for stepping up and completing the process. 6. Presentation of Communication Studies TMC Christine Warda presented. She commented on how well the courses in the AA-T fit with Chabot’s graduation requirements. Communication Studies, Associate in Arts – Transfer (AA-T) Communication Studies 50, Introduction to Communication Studies, 3 units There was discussion on whether this course should be moved from Area B to Required Core. It was agreed that it should, and Jane stated that she had received word from Stephanie Low that having more than one course in the Core was OK. Discussion on whether “world view” (Expected Outcome #8) is adequately represented in the rest of the outline. Suggested to add to Typical Assignments. Communication Studies 6, Introduction to Performance Studies, 3 units Course has been revised to make it more acceptable for CSU-GE articulation. Patricia suggested reordering the Outcomes to put “theory” at the top. Add the word “theory” to one of the Outcomes. Make one of the Assignments grounded in theory. MSC (Shannon/Ogman) to accept the Communication Studies AA-T, COMM 6 and COMM 50 contingent upon corrections as noted. Please make corrections by next week and send them to Jane and Kaaren. 7. Liberal Arts AA Updates Ernesto Victoria stated that the original AA has been updated to include courses that have been added to CSU and UC transfer lists since the last approval. • • Christine Warda asked that COMM 3, 5, 48, and 50 be added to Emphasis 2. Sociology 5 and 6 will be added to Emphasis 3. Changes were approved by consensus. 8. Update on TMC proposals Jane shared updates to TMC information. Go to www.c-id.net/ for the latest news. 9. Curriculum Process: from Proposal to Class Schedule Jane commented that she has seen courses listed in the Class Schedule that have not come through the Curriculum Committee. She questioned whether the Committee is responsible for what is in the Class Schedule, and if so, what are we going to do to ensure accuracy of listings? Patricia thinks that we are responsible. Begoña asked what the consequences would be if we were audited. The Title 5 timeline for review of course outlines was also mentioned, as well as the approval process for PE activity courses. Curriculum Committee 4-26-11, Page 3 MSC (Shannon/Victoria) that the chair of the Committee meet with the Vice President of Academic Services and that together they aggressively identify an appropriate course of action. 7.
