CHABOT COLLEGE February 22, 2011 Members Present: Debbie Buti, Jane Church, Begoña Cirera Perez, Barbara Ogman, Patricia Shannon, Ernesto Victoria, Christine Warda Ex-Officio Members Present: Edna Danaher, Kaaren Krueg, George Railey Guests: None 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by the chair, Jane Church. 2. Minutes of February 15, 2011 MSC (Shannon/Buti) to approve the minutes of February 15, 2011, as presented. 3. 4. Calendar for the upcoming 2011 Curriculum Year (January-December) Technical Review component of proposal review Jane reported that she has developed a spreadsheet for tracking submissions. She is using Kurt Shadbolt as a test case. His first submission had pieces missing, so she sent it back to him. When we receive the complete packet it will go to technical review (Jane, Kaaren, Division Rep), then back to Kurt for changes. At that time, he will be told, “You have been assigned presentation Date X. This date presumes that you will provide corrected copy for the committee one week prior to the committee meeting.” There was discussion regarding who should be the collection person for technical corrections. The secretary’s notes were unclear. Also, the faculty member should return corrected copy to the chair, who will distribute to the committee prior to the meeting. 5. Duties and Responsibilities of Curriculum Chair and Reps Jane asked reps to go back to their divisions and jot down ideas about their duties on the committee. She referred to a publication by the Academic Senate of the California Community Colleges that outlines committee duties. http://www.asccc.org/sites/default/files/Curriculum.pdf 6. Update on SB 1440 and the first 3 TMC (Transfer Model Curriculum) proposals Jane referred the committee to the C-ID web page (http://www.c-id.net/degreereview.html). There is a link on the Curriculum Committee web page. She asked George for comments on the new law. He replied that we have some curriculum already in place that can be sent forward with only minor adjustments. Patricia added that the State wants a quick pass through for students. The law requires that we have two TMCs in place by Fall 2011. Currently the state has finalized TMCs for Communication Studies, Sociology, and Psychology. Under review (until February 28) are Criminal Justice, Kinesiology and Math. To ensure that you will have input and information, go the website (see link above) and sign up on the list serve page under your discipline. Jane told Barbara Ogman that she will be happy to come to her division and show them how to participate. Christine Warda has a Communication Studies model almost ready to go, and Andrew Pierson is working on Psychology. The AA-T programs must be approved by our Board Curriculum Committee 2-22-11, Page 2 and the State Chancellor’s Office and published in our Addendum. If we delay publication until early June, we must submit to the Board on April 19 (Board deadline April 4) which will leave May for State submission and approval. Jane led discussion on ways to comply with the new law. She stated that if we choose to follow the model closely, the State will grant approval quickly. Christine reported that she has read the regulations and feels that because there are options built into the TMC we have enough courses in place to build the Communication Studies degree. She also noted that List C is a place where we can cooperate with other disciplines by listing nonmajor choices. Patricia spoke to the idea of maintaining as broad a program as possible to encourage life-long learning. Patricia stated that there will be consequences in some areas of enrollment and impact on some of our local graduation requirements. In answer to a question posed by Jane, George said that outlines do not need to be dated “Fall 2011” but must be current per Title 5 requirements. There was discussion on why you would want to offer two degrees, the AA-T and the regular AA. Christine stated that Communication Studies plans to adopt the AA-T as their only degree. Jane added that up until now she has been telling students that courses transfer, not degrees. That will now change, and the degree will be what transfers. 7. Repeatability Issue Performance and activity classes may be taken one time and repeated three times for a total of four. Jane reported that Napa Valley and Los Medanos have defined technical theater courses as activity. Patricia stated that when students exceed repeatability through exemptions, we do not receive funds for their attendance. She added that the scrutiny level is increasing and it is very likely that the state is going to audit courses in these areas. Jane stated that we need to establish guidelines and a process for granting repeatability. We need to review the courses that are currently repeatable to determine whether they are in compliance with the regulations, and we need to learn to say “no” to inappropriate requests. We also need to bring counseling into the mix. She will add this topic to the next agenda. 8. Good of the Order Jane asked that reps please encourage their faculty to present in the spring. 9. The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m. Next meeting: March 8. kk 2/24/11 c:\documents\word\curric\2010-2011\2-22-11.min.doc
