n, .': pp:cp 610; INTERSEGMENTAL GENERAL EDUCATION TRANSFER CURRICULUM FOR THE C ALIFORNIA S TATE U NIVERSITY SYSTEM OR U NIVERSITY OF C ALIFORNIA SYSTEM 2005-06 Effective Fall 2005. S ring 2006, Summer 2006 CHABOT CO L L E G l INFORMATION & GUIDELINES FOR USING The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) T he Intersegmental General Educati on Transfer C urriculum IGETC is a general education pattern of co urses wh ich community college transfer students can. use to fulfill lower-division general education require ments for either the CSU or UC systems, without the need , after transfer, to take additional lower-division gen eral ed ucation co urses. T he IGETC is NOT an admissio n requirement to the CSU or UC system. There is no connection between completio n of the IGETC and elig ibility for admission to the CSU or UC system , or admission to a specifi c ca mp us or program/major Existing seg mental and campus-specific admission requi re ments for transfer students remain unchanged . Requirements fo r lowe r- division cou rses for ad mission to parti cular m ajors also remain unchanged. T he IGETC is NOT advisable for all transfer students. Wh ile a ll CSU 's accept IGETC, some colleges w ithin the UC system do not. Students who intend to transfer into high unit majors, such as engineering, bu siness or so me pre-professional progr:3ms, should concentrate on completing the prerequisites for the maj or that the college screens to determine e ligibility. T he IGETC will probably be MOST USEFUL for those students wishing to keep their option s open before making a final decision about transferring to a particular UC or CSU campus . It is strongly recommended that students consult with a counselor to determine which general education pattern is best for their transfer program. Guidelines for using IGETC: 1. Most students who use IGETC w il l complete A LL secti ons which will q ualify the m for FULL CE RTIFICATI ON of the appropriate UC or CSU option s. Under unu sual circumstances one or two IGETC cou rses can be com pleted after transfer. "I f you are in y our last term prior to tra nsfer and, for good ca uses, are unable to complete one or two IGETC courses (i n Areas 3,4 , or 5) you may be eligibl e to co m plete IGETC after transferring." See a cou nselor for details. 2. CERTI FICATION: Certification does not happen automati cally; th e student m ust request IGETC Certifi cation at the same time a request for a final transcript to be sent to the CSU o r UC sch ool is made. Certifi cati on is completed by the last community college attended. Requests for IG ETC Certification are made with A dmissions and Records , Bldg . 100. 3. AII IGETC courses must be completed w ith a grade of "C" or better of "CR". 4 . CSU transfers are required to complete th e Oral Commu nication req uirement (AREA 1. Group C ). They shou ld also complete the U.S. History Constitution and American Ideals requirement even though it is not part of IG ETC certification . Co urses taken for this area can not be doub le cou nted in Area 4 . CSU transfers DO NOT have to complete the Foreign Language requirement. 5. UC transfers need to complete the Foreign Lang uage requirement, but are not required to complete O ra l Communications or the U.S. History. Constitution and American Ideals requirements. 6 . Courses taken at other 4-year institutions, except for foreign institutio ns, can be used to certify IGETC. Students should be aware, however, that placement of cou rses w ithin IGETC subject a reas may vary from college to college. Placement of a course will be based on the college of attendance and its IGETC pattern at the time the course w as taken. See a counselo r for assistance. 7. A student who has been registered at a UC and is returning to that sam e UC is considered a "readmit" an d cannot use IGETC. If the student is plannin g to attend a differen t UC camp us, then IGET C is OK. See a counselor for assistance . Using IGETC to complete lower division general education requirements is a G REAT way to save time and money in terms of completing GE graduation requirements at UC or CSU . It may be just right for you . However, it is very important that you consult with a counselor in developing your IG ETC educational plan . While every assurance is taken in providing up-to-the-minu te accurate written information ... our counselors are your BES T RESOURCE. Please make an a ppointment today to discuss what IGETC can do forYOU! 1 -his pattern applies to courses completed in Fall, '05, Spring, '06 and Summer, '06. If you completed courses prior to these semesters, please consult the IGETC pattern for the year you completed the course.
