(Note: Forrest Dolgener is unable to attend IAAC meetings for the rest of the semester due to scheduling conflicts with Faculty Senate meetings.) Recorder: Sarah Harms 1. Minutes approved from February 6 and March 5, 2012. 2. Athletic Director Report a. Troy is spending much time correcting “misinformation” that is circulating about athletics, including the deficit misconception (characterizing general fund support as a “deficit”) and the exact amount of the operating budget. In broad terms, there are three budget totals being discussed publicly. Troy’s “actual” budget is about $11.6 million. A $14 million budget figure is reported to the federal government and is available through the EADA. This figure includes summer sports camps (where the coaches keep the profits), post-season revenues (UNI cannot plan to earn any postseason revenues), and increases in the value of funds held in Foundation accounts. A $17 million budget figure is reported to the NCAA. This figure includes “indirect support,” which is not relevant to Troy’s annual budget because it includes items such as a portion of President Allen’s salary, electricity (which is already included as an expense in the “real” budget), etc. The percentage used to calculate indirect support varies across institutions. At UNI, it is based on the overhead percent used for grants. Some schools choose not to report indirect support to the NCAA. Troy proposed a shift from general fund support to student fees support. This measure must be approved year-by-year and assumes no growth but maintains the same amount of support for the next 8 years. b. Athletics hosted the NCAA women’s basketball regional tournament in Des Moines. The event was very successful. The department had no financial gain from the event but also took no financial risk. c. An announcement is forthcoming regarding a “Big Four” event which will be a men’s basketball event in Des Moines involving UNI, Iowa, ISU, and Drake. d. Jean has been named to the NCAA volleyball committee. 3. Recertification update – no report 4. Compliance Officer Report – Daren Koudele a. Spring National Letters of Intent begin next week. 71 students signed National Letters of Intent for fall sports with an average Regents’ Admissions Index (RAI) of 288. Next meeting will report on the comparison of academic markers of student athletes versus the general student population. 5. Academic Advising – Kara Park a. SAAC completed 1500 hours of community service. Their hours were instrumental in the University winning an Award of Excellence for community involvement. b. SAAC hosted 170 kids at Jr. Panther Day. c. There will not be a senior banquet this year, but they are working on awards and will have them ready by graduation. 6. Faculty Athletics Representative – Lisa Jepsen a. Invited committee to April 20 lecture by John Siegfried. He will discuss the value of athletics. Lisa will discuss with him ideas for a cost/benefit study of the athletic department’s value to the community. b. Discussed student athletes that will be nominated for various spring scholarship awards. 7. Old business a. Exit Interviews – list is being compiled and will be given to Russ, Mark, Kay, and Jean to assist with in-person interviews. b. Hiring – Head swim coach position is currently open and resumes are being reviewed, vacant assistant football coach may not be filled until fall, and assistant men’s basketball coach will be advertised as soon as possible. 8.
