Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Council (IAAC) Meeting
September 6, 2012
3:30 PM
McLeod Center ~ Alumni Suite
Present: Ronnie Bankston, Jean Berger, Jess Betts, Russ Campbell, Forrest Dolgener, Tim Gilson,
Stacia Greve, Joel Haack, Mark Jacobson, Lisa Jepsen, Jacqui Kalin, Rex Karsten, Tiffany Koss (for
Dakotah Reed), Lisa Krausman, Kara Park, Ashley Shells, and Kay Weller.
Recorder: Sarah Harms
1. Welcomed Ashley Shells, the new Director of Compliance
2. Athletic Director Report (reported by Jean Berger in Troy’s absence)
a. Discussed reactions to the Waterloo Courier articles. Troy requests any feedback.
Overall, he is pleased with the series so far because information is accurate.
b. Distributed fiscal reports per sport for 2007-2012. Includes 3 main areas
(salaries/wages, supply/service, scholarships). Document is used to monitor and
develop sport budgets.
3. Senior Women’s Administrator Report – Jean Berger
a. Distributed roster management report. Student athlete percentages must mirror the
overall undergraduate percentages within 5%. Report includes all participants, not just
student-athletes with scholarships. Report double counts multi-sport athletes. For
example, a football player who participates in outdoor track and field is counted twice.
b. Lisa thanked Jean for her diligence in this area while the department was without a
compliance officer.
4. Compliance Officer Report – no report (because she just started her job)
5. Academic Advising – Kara Park/Stacia Greve
a. They have received lots of requests for tutors. If committee members can provide any
contact names who could recommend tutors within departments, Kara and Stacia will
contact them.
b. SAAC’s first meeting was the Welcome Back Picnic. Jacqui Kalin is serving on the
national SAAC committee. Registrar’s office requested a member of SAAC to attend
their meetings. Question was asked if departments can give suggestions of class
times? Kara and Stacia always remind the student athletes to talk to their advisors or
department heads with any scheduling issues.
6. Faculty Athletics Representative – Lisa Jepsen
a. Saving comments for New Business
7. Old business – none
8. New Business
a. Travel Schedules – Discussed an overview of travel schedules. Choice of travel dates
can often be money driven. The conference schedule is out of our control. Travel can
be cyclical – some years a team misses more MWF or more TTh. Scheduling focus is
on the non-conference schedule where they mostly bus/van to get there. Jean
distributed a chart of missed class days by sport. Golf usually misses the most time
because courses are not available on the weekends. Anyone with a question should
feel free to ask Ashley/Jean/Troy. A best practice is to have the student tell professor
well in advance and keep communication open. If faculty members see a pattern,
please contact Stacia/Kara. Action Step – Lisa will assign each IAAC member one
sport to review its travel schedule and look for any concerns.
b. Missed Class Issue – student athlete was denied ability to make up quizzes, which
appeared to be in violation of University’s missed class policy. Question raised on
best practice for the student – who is their advocate? Please copy Lisa on any
correspondence. She will contact the IAAC departmental rep to have that person
discuss the situation with their faculty peer. Discussed another best practice – have
student athlete start on a good note by visiting faculty during office hours to discuss
missed classes, not to simply hand them the missed class letter; have students
approach faculty with an “I want to succeed” attitude rather than “I need to miss class”
comment.
c. Faculty Comments in Class – discussion regarding negative faculty comments about
athletics. When do they cross the line to inappropriate? IAAC members can always
talk to faculty peer-to-peer; students should be educated on the spectrum from free
speech to remarks that would make them feel as if they could be treated unfairly.
Meeting adjourned.
