Foreign language is hard enough in class but even harder when online and the instructor did not translate much in English so I was left to figure out a lot on my own. Even instructions. I would have completed this class if I hadn't move to South Lake Tahoe, CA. If I wasn't doing other classes at the same time The instructor dropped me even though I followed her requirement to complete the first assignment on BB I had a hard time concentrating because of personal obligations. Work/family The homework and the chapter resembled each other. We were expected to solve homework questions that were missing information and the chapter never told us how to find that information. I wasn't new to the online courses. Better assignment timing The teacher made the requirements for assignments known at the beginning of the semester along with the dates in which each week's assignments had to be completed. I felt like it was very unorganized and that the students were just supposed to know what to do on Blackboard without any direction within the first weeks of the course. complete a group project, group project are extremely difficult to complete., if you had anticipated completing the work at your convenience. I complete my home work at 3-4 am. I do not have time during I were still interested in pursuing Accounting. I dropped the course because I changed my focus of study. I hadn't been a software engineer for 35 years. I didn't realize the course would involve learning to program a simple microprocessor . I find a more reliable computer I had more time to complete my tasks The books/materials were affordable. i didn't work as much and if i didn't move out of state. It wasn't online my other courses were alot of work therefore i couldnt put the time or effort that was needed to complete this course. and i had started a job as well The teacher should of posted the information more clearly. It was just all there with no clear direction. the instructor was more available for me I had been better at managing my time frame for participating. the teacher payattention for us. the instructor pay more attention to us, replay my email, and more respond. I could get into the act of checking the blackboard more than once a day. I participated more and retained more information in the pre-requisite class. the instructor be more helpful when his students needed help. I could get permanent schedule job-hours. Instructor expected too much my personal computer was up and running. It had caught a virus and completely shut down my hard drive hence needed to my computer to be repair. By the time I received my computer, I was 2 weeks behind. The assignments werent all due at the same time. The textbook was more interesting. My schedule at work had not suddenly shifted and I was given extra projects. I didn't have two other courses. I was doing well but it was at the risk of the other two courses. I had some serious personal issues which definitely took away my focus. Depends on which couse. In general, instructor responsiveness makes a huge difference to whether I keep a class or not. My own schedule sometimes interferes. I had less scheduling conflicts. If I did not have scheduling issues I had more information on to do the online class, and a direct email address to email the teacher I had received notifications of due dates directly to my email like I thought I had set up. I had more time If I was available. Didn't have time, my work and on site school schedule kept me really busy. I am not overloaded I was not taking a calculus time in the same semester. If I wasn't confused about my life course I did not have technical issues and if it was a required class for my degree. If I hadn't been over comited outside of school. I hadn't gotten so sick and hadn't had such conflicts with my schedule. it was more easy to navigate I didn't have other classes that required more time than I initially was prepared to give. The discussion boards are not as stimulating conversation as a regular lecture/discussion course. I would rather have a regular chat session with all the class about a topic or if there were only tests. I had more time. Also the class was kind of hard. The lessons were more clear and not have to go to other links that some times did not work. I wanted to be a technician. The teacher was better. He was a terrible teacher and shouldn't be teaching the class The course materials were more practical and pertinent to my work. The course materials seemed amateurish. The instructor was more open to communication, had a better format for navigating the class. I work full time and am a single mother in school, if the instructor had emailed before she withdrew me, maybe I could've remained in the class. The instructor did not seem to care about my success within the class, unlike most instructors I have had bother online and on campus. Decided on my major. If i had the time and a better computer. I was in class! I had taken this course on campus. I feel that it was a difficult class because I needed more understanding and help,. I have taken other classes but this one was different. I managed my time better I had more in class instruction and the material had been introduced to me before my homework was due. I might have completed the course if the teacher would have graded the work I had submitted prior to the last day to drop. He waited over a month and a half to grade the first assignment. It would have been nice to gauge how I was doing in the class so I could assess my work. If my work schedule wasn't so complicated. i had more time My internet went down while I was taking the test. I didn't want to bother explaining the situation but I do plan on retaking the class again. I had taken it in a classroom setting. I had more assistance from the teacher. The books did not cost so much. I'm paying out of pocket no financial aide. My dad didn't have two heartattacks and be diagnosed with three heart diseases, while trying to run my business and put more time in at my second job. :( I lost my grant money too. I understood the material better. The text and assignments weren't too difficult to comprehend or if I had taken this class on campus so I could have in-person assistance from the instructor I had received my books sooner It was my only class and I was not working you were not required to work in a group project. Online course and group project are extremely difficult I didn't miss one day of class because we were required to show up all meet days every month. in response to #3 i did not withdraw from this class I had time Question 5: What advice would you give to other students who are considering taking an online/hybrid class? Don't take a foreign language online. Keep up on your work, and make sure you have internet at home Keep up on your work, and make sure you have internet at home It doesn't take less time than a regular class. Be prepared for what it is To be in constant communication with instructor The same advice the school gives, online classes are not easier than in school classes. Take it if the subject of the class is something you feel you have a pretty good grasp on and don't need much help with. Try it out first. Explore blackboard throughly at the beginning of the semester and if you are confused on anything you find, email the teacher to clarify as soon as possible. if there is a group project..DROP THE CLASS! I would advise students be disciplined and not fall behind. Plan on spending a lot of time doing internet study out of the classroom. Dont pick a class you know you need help with or thats to hard. Make sure you have time. Because even though it is online you still need to check back frequently they should set a alarm to remember deadlines Read the book ahead of time. organizational skills are key to passing a online class Can you pay attention while doing an assignment online? If you can and are self motivated then an online class is good for you keep up with deadlines it is important as some teachers are very strict about this. make sure you have enough time to do the work Research thoroughly. To read everything and to always log on. information and textbook, have another classmate help Make sure to keep a daily schedule if you're not used to having one. Take the class that you feel you like, fit and right to you. Take the class witch the pro. are responsibility. If you are a person that doesn't need a group setting this is a good choice for you. Always remember to complete the online portion. You have to be familiar with blackboard and know the basic of how to use a computer. If you are taking accounting class and need to use Connect, plan on spending approximately 8 hours on assignments. Get in touch with the instructor as soon an issue arises. Domt take it, go to campus Enroll, you save gas and time. Do not take more than two at a time. Think really hard before you take it. Make sure you'll be able to do the work Online courses are great. Give it a try. Online classes are great it allows you to earn a living without interference with your job or seeking employment. Attend the orientation for negotiating Blackboard--it is an imperfect system and can be more or less difficult to navigate depending on computer issues, skills, and instructor's organization, clarity, and responsiveness. Be more vocal in offering feedback to instructors regarding user interface issues. Plan more time than seemingly necessary to complete online courses. Be a self starter Information on how to use and how to access blackboard Check the message board everyday. Keep a calendar with due dates and look over it every day so that you don't fall behind. Have a lot of time available!!! Try to get online to study at least 3-4 times a week and do not wait until thelast minute to do assignments or tests. Just to be sure to not take too many classes at the same time that require a lot of time commitment. Don't unless you are very Good at making your own schedule You have to be very self motivated with an ability to manage time and meet deadlines, which are qualities that are needed in a working environment. One way I have accomplished this is by developing a detailed schedule and checking off each task that is completed. It's easy if your computer suavy and learn well by reading and online searchs. Be realistic about your schedule. dont unless they know how to use a computer Go for it! It's an awesome experience if one is disciplined. Make sure it is for you. To double think before taking the class. I am not sure because I have taken online courses before but this was just way confusing and required much more than I anticpated. Online classes are great. Double check who your teachers are Try to see the textbook ahead of time. Be sure to take a class with an instructor who cares about your academic success with the class and in general, and also life circumstances. Have open communication with them. Do it. They are very convenient. if you think you are able to take a online class and have the time and resources go ahead and take the class. Don't take it. In class is the ay to go! Be prepared and ask for extra help if you need it from the teacher. Good time management Choose the class based on your own learning style and the amount of in class instruction available. Be prepared to work hard and to teach yourself. Stay disciplined and stay on top of the work that is given through the online course. be organized and check at least 3 times a week It's very convenient. Do not take foreign languages online. They are not all bad. You need the right teacher to be successful. Make sure u can afford the cost and have the time set asides Just finish it regardless of what happens in your life. Because as things in life will put u behind, losing an entire semester (6 months) is not worth it. Just communicate with your instructors, most of them are willibg to help and be flexible when life's unsuspecting disasters occur. Make sure your willing to put in the time and effort to do all you have to do for an online class. Make sure you have enough time to do the assignment and give yourself extra study time just in case the material is more difficult than you thought They take more time overall then impersonal classes group project suck! Don't miss class and fall behind! it's great - commit and you will succeed! don't stay on track Question 6. What advice can you offer to Chabot College to improve online/hybrid classes? Make sure that if a foreign language is for beginners that it really is a beginner course. I really like the way Jennifer did her hybrid class she was available a lot of the time, and she had the lectures on line which made it incredibly easy to learn. Jennifer Lange is an amazing instructor! Instructors to communicate clearly as to their requirement. Not to use 3rd party resources that cost more money to enroll and participate in online class aprt from Blackboard. For example using MyMath Llab, etc None, without Chabot's wide selection of online classes it would be impossible for me to have come this far in my college career. Let the students know where to find all the information needed to complete the assignments. Just to prepare students for these courses. They are very time consuming, Require the teacher to layout the specifics of the class within the first 2 weeks so that no one is left wondering what is required of the each week. Also the teacher should be required to make a schedule of some sort that lets the students know when their assignments and quizzes are due weekly. Group projects and online projects do not work for everyone!!! The reason people take online courses is due to the fact that they cannot commit to a specific time every week. They are completing the homework when they can, not in direct responce to 7 additional people within your project. I have no advice to offer other than to offer more online/hybrid classes. They're really convenient for those of us that have to work full-time. There should be more emphesis on lectures which reinforce the online material. I'm not a fan of instructors teaching multiple classes during the same class period. Offer more classes in general have a more diverse learning curriculum More updates from instructors. More questionnaires for discussion more variety of classes would be helpful for people in my situation who are single parents who work and cant always attend a class. make access to blackboard easier and sometimes blackboard will lock you out of you account in the middle of a test or assignment NA That there should be a requirement for the teachers to not be allowed to post work in advance. more help between the student and the instructors None. no common More respond, pay attention to students question, and sure to reply their email. Nothing. N/A This is the first hybrid class I have ever taken so I don't know if the time-consumption problem is unique to this class or not. None. Make it even to the on campus class N/A Make them more interesting! none. I think the program is as good as it gets. Stay on top of the assignments and start working on it early Make the classes more compatible to Mac computers Improve standards; pay or otherwise reward instructors to attend training for online/hybrid course management. Organization in Blackboard system ranges from great to cumbersome and confusing; help instructors keep it user-friendly. The course material should be the focus, not how to find it. (This has been improving over the semesters.) First, update your version of blackboard. Secondly, standardize instructor's settings to maximize user experience. Finally, demand online instructors review best practices for settings options when setting up their classroom environment. none More information to blackboard Have notifications linked directly to the student's email address or text messages. Maybe a one time class meeting with teacher on first day (or before) of class instructions begin so she/he can go over materials, were to submit homework etc. Over the courses of several online classes, all the teachers had different requirements on how to submit work and at the beginning I found that very confusing. none Offer more online classes on other subjects. Especially the popular GE classes. Hh My experience with online learning has been very good. I have only had a few technical issues that were able to be resolved either by the instructor or technical support. Fix the f****ing financial aid so that students don't get screwed because of the way the online classes are scheduled. The whole online interface is a mess. The way it was last year, or a few years ago, was much easier to navigate and use. It took me about 2 hours to read through and do everything I was supposed to do to fully have access to my online classes. Make things easier, not harder. it suck None Perhaps categorize that types of the online courses. Or make the online courses more uniformed. Have more. they are very good otherwise Make sure instructors are not selecting course materials based on the convenience of the teacher. Their an online course, the text or online coursework is very important, perhaps more important than the teacher. The online French class is an example of very well- designed course materials. Have black board automatically email you to remind you of assignments due, etc Offer more English and math classes. Have the teacher teach atleast one class a week in person. N.a Some teachers to be willing to have time for the students that taking online classes. Make work more on the students time. Less due dates, as long as all win is completed by end of clad. I would like to see the resolution of some of the bugs on Blackboard. During a test, if you accidentally double-click the submit button the system will automatically kick you our of blackboard. I have encountered this several times. I have also found that Blackboard is aware of the problem but has yet to find a solution. This would be helpful for students who have teachers that prefer to have all questions on their online tests on separate pages. N/A Offer more online classes They are not all bad. You need the right teacher to be successful. More interaction with the instructor. Improve the ability to add into classes. Since many students still drop from classes, it is much more fair to all students to let more than the capacity add on the grounds that statistically many more students already enrolled in the class will drop in the first two weeks and be too late for desperate students, who are more committed, to add the course. Take advantage of the tutoring. Maybe instructors can create some kind of exercise to see if the students are on the same page and know what they need to know or check in with the students periodically I understand that for the teacher group project are easier 1 project for 6-10 students but trying to work with other and their schedules is extremely difficult nothing. chabot you are doing a fantastic job! keep it up! none Question 7. How many online/hybrid classes have you taken? answered question 91 skipped question 2 Response Percent Response Count This was my first attempt 20.9% 19 I have attempted at least one other online/hybrid class but did not complete it/them 4.4% 4 I have attempted at least one other online/hybrid class and completed it/them 39.6% 36 I have attempted other online/hybrid courses: I completed at least one but dropped one or more 15.4% 14 Other (please specify) I have taken almost all my accounting degree requirements online. No other Bay Area community college offers this many online courses! Thanks Chabot! I began with two classes and I had to drop one. This is my first semester taking any online classes but I was taking two before dropping this class. I have taken more than 10 online courses and had two group projects. The first group project was in my health class, no one in my group ever responded to my email until 1 week before the project was due. It was extremely stressful and I will never go throught that again.! I have taken over ten online courses. I have attempted and completed every other online/ hybrid classes. My first time of attempting. Completed many, dropped many. My answers apply to multiple classes except for #3; #1 is the usual way. Approximately 4 or 5 I have taken around 12 online classes between 3 colleges and have completed 90% of them. I have taken about 14 out of 16 of my classes at Chabot online, which has worked out well for me as I work full time. All but one of the eleven classes I have taken @ Chabot have been online/hybrid classes. I have attempted six hybrid classes and withdrew from two, one was a accidental withdraw the other was because I had found out that the class was more technician directed and not for my major so I withdrew to allow me to focus more on my curren classes all of my classes are online, i have completed 6 I have taking previous online classes before. I have failed only one online class before and that was my first time every taking one, so I was confused. nothing to specify. Many more than 20...
