Research and Creative Activity
My research focuses on nature, where I have little control and few preconceived notions. My
aim is to interrogate my own relationship with the natural world in an effort to reach a greater understanding and
awareness. I began this research photographing at night using only the intermittent light of the flash to illuminate
the scene. Most recently I am photographing at the water's edge, looking at regional rivers, lakes and the Gulf of
Mexico. In this work I am looking at the ocean currents, the border between land and water, and the relationship between what is seen above and what is unseen below the water. These water studies are created using both
a pinhole camera and a digital underwater camera. The results are surprising and unexpected as much as they are
revealing of interconnected patterns. Supplemental readings in Ecofeminism and natural history have helped to
define the direction of my investigation.
