ZymoGenetics Tour
Recap
The June 14th tour of the new Fermentation Lab at the
ZymoGenetics headquarters in the Lake Union Steam
Plant building was a sold out success. Chapter
President Dave Spanel welcomed the crowd and then
introduced Dan Dralle, the Director of Facilities and
management at ZymoGenetics. Dan gave a brief
overview of the history of ZymoGenetics and discussed
how they have been named the Bristol-Myers Squibb
Microbial Center of Excellence. This new role within
the BMS organization has driven their need to expand
microbial fermentation capabilities. Dan provided an
overview of the basics of the fermentation process and
then explained the schedule, budget and facilities
challenges that had to be overcome for the project to be
successful.
After the presentation the crowd broke in to small
groups and put on lab coats and safety glasses for tours
of the Fermentation Lab, as well as the adjacent
mechanical room with the clean utilities serving the lab.
The twelve new 15 liter bioreactors are arranged around
an accessible utility spine that allowed personnel to
easily access all connections to the reactors if needed to
adjust the set-up for new processes. Zymo staff was
on hand to show off the equipment and answer
questions.
