“Boston College commits itself to the highest standards of teaching and research in
undergraduate, graduate and professional programs and to the pursuit of a just society
through its own accomplishments, the work of its faculty and staff, and the achievements
of its graduates…As a Catholic and Jesuit university, it is rooted in a world view that
encounters God in all creation and through all human activity, especially in the search for
truth in every discipline, in the desire to learn, and in the call to live justly together.”
–The Mission of Boston College
I believe in Boston College’s commitment to a just society. As “men and women for
others,” I think the commitment to justice should be expressed in all aspects of the
University, including its investment practices. That is why I support the creation of an
Advisory Committee on Socially Responsible Investing (ACSRI).
The ACSRI is an appropriate and necessary component in the Mission of Boston College,
which will greatly aid in the “pursuit of a just society.” Its recommendations will reveal
ways in which Boston College can promote social and environmental justice as a
responsible investor.
The ACSRI will further the goals set forth by the University and demonstrate the ability
of Boston College to be a leader in the fight for justice in all forms. A balanced approach
is necessary and provided, losing sight of neither Boston College’s fiduciary
responsibility nor the potential for positive impact through investing in a socially
responsible manner.
The ACSRI will help Boston College pursue its distinctive mission by fostering the
rigorous intellectual development and the religious, ethical and personal formation of its
undergraduate, graduate and professional students in order to prepare them for
citizenship, service and leadership in a global society.
As Boston College realizes the importance of promoting leadership and justice, it would
be greatly advantageous to adopt an Advisory Committee on Socially Responsible
Investing.
