BACKGROUND:
SSCC Meeting October 6, 2014
Information Packet
In the spring of 2014 the SSCC allocated $21,000 to hire an administrative assistant to
support the Student Life office and the Student Senate. While this amount is sufficient to
cover salary expenses (Classified, Administrative Assistant 1, Step 1), the allocation
does not account for benefits and overtime.

Supporting Geek Week
BACKGROUND:
This is an event a student and her club has proposed. “Geek Week” is an event that
runs the week of 10/27. Every day of the week would be a different theme, and all the
events or exhibits would recur around that theme.

I will have an idea of what this student is envisioning with this idea. It seems developed
enough to the point where we can see what we can actually do to support this event.

Introduce the Transportation Initiative to the Student Senate
BACKGROUND:
This is an ongoing project from Spring ’14, started in the Passion Purpose class by Tyri
Watson, a student that has since transferred to a 4 year institution. It reached
referendum last year but not enough time was left in the semester to finish it.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
The Student Senate should collaborate with students working on this project, creating a
campaign for bus passes for all students. A student representative(s) will be attending

Campus Water Filter
BACKGROUND:
At beginning of year division meeting at Las Positas, we saw that Las Positas college
has these water filling stations. The user can refill their water bottle with this station. I
have also seen these at UC Berkeley.
Kate has already received approval to put this on the agenda of the next Facilities and
Sustainability committee meeting.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Discuss what more the Senate would need to do to begin pursuing the installation of
these stations. Research on cost? Benefits? Also, we should decide who would like to

Flea Market Requirement
BACKGROUND:
According to the most updated bylaw and past practice, all SSCC members are to fulfill
1 Chabot College Flea Market volunteer work (which is one Saturday of the month) per
semester. Which is a total twice a year during the member’s term. There have been
discussions going on and off between advisor, myself and other SSCC members on
whether we should still continue on fulfilling that requirement.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Decide to whether keep in the bylaws to fulfill the Flea Market Requirement or not

Judicial Committee Review Update
BACKGROUND:
As every SSCC member should know, by the bylaws there are duties everyone
(depending on their current position) has to fulfill monthly and per semester. The
Judicial Review Committee meets at the end of every month. As of currently (not
counting the interns that are just being sworn in), mostly all current SSCC members
have passed the monthly review. The following members that have not meet their
duties, have been e-mailed already by the Judicial Committee on what they needed to
fulfill. This will serve as a reminder that all SSCC members are to fulfill the requirements
or the Judicial Review Committee can remove them from office by the second offense.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Every SSCC member review their position in the bylaws

Student Senate Appropriations Committee
Written Report 8.2
Finance Director L. Flores
10-06-14
In last Thursday’s committee meeting the committee decided by consensus to adopt a policy of
hard deadlines for the purposes of receiving funding applications.
Additionally, the committee will not be reviewing funding applications from the college until
after students have been notified through Zonemail (and other methods) about their ability to
access SSCC funds for independent projects. It should be two weeks from this coming
Wednesday, October 8th that monthly application review/consideration process resumes.
Lastly, the college may submit funding applications on Wednesday if desired.

Update on SSCC Stipend Amount Revision(s)
Written Report
Finance Director L. Flores
10-06-14
I am writing this report as a declaration of non-intent.
Last Spring I presented an agenda item/proposal to the then 2013-14 SSCC regarding a proposal
to raise both the required office hours and the stipend amount to the Executive position of
Finance Director for this academic year. The reason for the proposal resulted from “on the job”
experience in this capacity and the actual number of hours actually needed to fulfill the
responsibilities of the office.
The conversation by the large Senate shifted to perhaps consider adopting a bonus for members
who exceed their respective office hours requirement as stipulated by our Bylaws.
Personally, I don’t believe Student Senate should consider adopting bonuses since bonuses are
used by the private sector to reward performance. It should not be an adopted practice of a
governing body such as our own.
I believe that if the Student Senate would like to consider revision/revisiting the stipend figures
of its members, it should be done across the board. Having stated that, if we would like to do
that as a full body, it will not be me, but another Senator who should make that proposal through
an agenda item.

Update on Successful Literacy Drive
BACKGROUND:
The Literacy Drive held in the Event Center on Tuesday 9/30 from 11am-1pm was a
success. There were about 150-200 students who came through; we actually ran out of
food before 12! Each coordinator had about a page and a half of people who signed up!
This was a really strong first step in getting Chabot involved in our community.
Highlights:
·
Members’ initiative and willingness to help. Everyone put in a great effort the day of
the event. Keep up the great work for future events!
·
The energy all our members brought to the event. If there is one thing all the
outside coordinators mentioned it was the positive energy.
·
Food was great!
·
Music, KCRH did an amazing job setting the mood and tone with their music.
(Derek)
·
Balloons and decorations (Bobby, Michael)
·
Photos (Hye, Derek, and Noeli)
·
Participation of clubs
·
Footprints (Valeria, Bianca, Hye, and AJ)
·
The awesome support and help from Arnold and Shoshanna
Areas for improvement:
·
SSCC table, we need better coordination next time. There were moments when it
was not clear who would be at the table. More flyers about town hall. Theresa did
an excellent job by covering two tables! Let’s get more people to help for next time.
·
Food, we did run out before halftime. Now that we have a first event to go off of we
can request funds for a little more food next time.
·
Coordination of footsteps – when there is a group of volunteers who are going to
help with a project (in this case the footsteps) we do not have them do all the work
while we sit back. As leaders we need to show initiative and involvement.
Remember that people who volunteer are giving up their time to help us; we do not
want people to feel we are taking them for granted.
·
Be on time or give proper notice. Noeli did a great job letting me know she would be
running a bit late but would still be there to help with our table. Also if you’re in
charge of a project make sure you’re on time and getting it done effectively. There
were also a couple people who said they would help but did not show up at all.
·
Find a way to count people who come in and differentiate them (student or staff).

There are only a few areas to improve on compared to the highlights. Some of them are
minor and we can iron out these wrinkles easily. We can improve on these areas to
make sure our future events are even stronger. Overall we had an excellent event and I
would like to thank everyone one last time.
