Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) – Annual Conference
On November 7th, the 5th annual DECA conference was held at Chabot College. Attendees
included 100 students from Chabot and the Hayward area high schools. Students came from
every department – from music to biology and, of course business. This year’s theme was
Business Ethics and the students were presented with a national and international labor
scenario and asked to respond to ethical problems that occur in the global labor environment.

In addition, DECA students attended the New York Leadership Training Conference and
developed connections with local businesses which provide internships and jobs in the Big
Apple and beyond. Most importantly, the big accomplishment for these students is to actually
“walk the walk” and several very talented DECA students are forming their own Beneficial
Corporation businesses to help individuals and companies plan events, develop social media
campaigns, and assist in other marketing efforts. Our congratulations on this effort which is a
clear demonstration of the value of DECA training in the business world.
Puente Project
The Puente Project at Chabot College
is continuing its excellence in
assisting students’ progress through
courses and be successful. Puente
students have participated in many
activities this semester, which include
meeting with their counselor on a
regular basis, bringing their
parents/families on campus for
Noche de Familia, meeting
professionals from the community at
the Student-Mentor Mixer,
participating in Service Learning
opportunities at local agencies and events in the Hayward/Southern Alameda County area, and
organizing a toy drive for FESCO, a local Homeless Shelter in Hayward. Spring 2015 will start off
with the showing of Jimmy Santiago Baca's new documentary A Place to Stand at Chabot's
Stage One Theater and participating in their 17th Annual Student Mentor Breakfast hosted by
CSU East Bay on Friday, March 6.

children to practice giving while receiving, and one child to see and report to her mom "I saw
Santa Claus, a real human being".

Hayward Great Debate: A Showcase of Student Work and Community Dialogue on
The Environment – December 5, 2014
The Great Debate on the Environment was held last Friday in
Hayward City Hall. The collaboration between Chabot College and
the community helped students discover community through
advocacy by having students present speeches, moderate and
facilitate group discussions, and exercise communication and
critical thinking skills. Over 200 students attended with
presentations from numerous on-campus groups including the CIN!
Learning Community, Passion and Purpose, numerous
Communication Studies and English courses, and the National
Award Winning Forensics team. Other highlights included a video message from Congressman
Eric Swallwell, presentations by the Amuh Mutsan Tribal Band, Hayward Promise
Neighborhood, and Treepeople (a non-profit environmental group). The feature of the day was
the Great Debate itself, paneled by Derek Chernow, Office of State Senator Bob Wieckowski;
Dr. Maria Ochoa, Chabot College; Dr. Jennifer Ong, Eden Valley League of Women Voters; Mark
Salinas, Chabot College; and Francisco Zermano, Hayward City Council.
