President’s Office Dr. Susan Sperling President’s Report to the Board of Trustees September 15, 2015 Physics 4A Stomprocket Once more, (Stomp)rockets flew over Chabot's Grand Courtyard as the Physics 4A classes explored the equations of one- and two-dimensional motion. Students work in teams to launch and measure the flight of the rockets using only timers and astrolabes - which measure angles and then calculate the peak height reached. They must compare the data from two different methods, determine their uncertainties, and explain their results in a concise lab report "to their boss." The lab, created by Professor Scott Hildreth after playing with his own sons in the park one day eight years ago, always provides a smile as much as it prompts student learning. The Chabot Gladiator Fall Sports Season promises to be packed with highly competitive teams poised to dominate the competition. After a successful 2014-15 campaign that witnessed Chabot’s Football Team, under Head Coach Danny Calcagno, win its fourth consecutive conference championship, 2015 will see a solid run at number 5. Co-Head Coaches Siu Fanene and Julia Havili led Women’s Volleyball in 2014 to the program’s most wins in a single season since 2005, they are currently 7-1. Men’s Soccer Head Coach Tony Igwe and Women’s Soccer head coach Markus Bathelt are leading their teams off to a strong start, not shying away from the toughest competition that the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) has to offer building there valuable power ranking points for a long awaited return to post season glory. Wrestling Head Coach Steve Siroy, Chabot College’s longest tenured head coach (1983), coming off a Coast Conference Team Championship has reloaded the grappler squad with local talent for another run at glory. Our keynote speaker this year is Mr. James O’Neal, Executive Director of Legal Outreach, a non-profit, law-related college prep and pipeline diversity organization based in New York. The topic of his presentation is “Democracy, Diversity & the Quest for Opportunity.” Legal Outreach prepares students from underserved communities in New York City to compete at high academic levels using a model that integrates law and education. The organization was named by Social Impact Research, a division of Root Cause, as one of the highest performing college access and success programs in New York. For his work at Legal Outreach, Mr. O’Neal received a “Heroes” Award from the Robin Hood Foundation, an honorary degree from CUNY Law School, Diversity Awards from the ABA and the NYC Bar Association, and a Visionary Leadership Award from Legal Services NYC for his exemplary approach to integrating law and education. This year, we are especially pleased to have Mr. O’Neal join us to celebrate both Constitution Day and the official kickoff of Chabot College’s Pathway to Law School Program. Legal Outreach’s four-year College Bound Program was the inspiration for our Pathway to Law School Program that extends our pathway to middle schools in our service area. Mr. O’Neal is an attorney, Harvard Law School and Emory College graduate and former Lecturer-in-Law at Columbia Law School. He was also the first recipient of Harvard Law School’s Public Interest Law Fellowship. If you want to learn more about Legal Outreach, visit their website at: www.legaloutreach.org. Please join us for this special event on Thursday, September 17, 2015. There will be a reception following the presentation. Hope to see you there!
