CIN! Change It Now!
Equity Proposal
Fall 2014
Program Overview:
CIN! Change It Now! is entering it’s fifth year of existence at Chabot College. CIN is
an academically rigorous social justice leadership program designed to support
students interested in social change who would also like to transfer to four year
colleges. CIN provides a strong academic foundation, an empowering and
supportive community and strives to instill social justice values in each student. By
offering courses within the “Golden Four” (written communication, oral
communication, critical thinking and logic), participation in CIN allows students to
finish their first year of college with completed general education requirements
giving them the foundation they need for academic success. Students build
relationships with each other that offer support, empowerment and networking
opportunities. Finally, each CIN faculty member designs their class with a social
justice lens so students obtain a social justice framework as they engage in the
world. CIN courses explore issues such as human rights, systems of oppression,
violence and education. Students gain a sense of agency from their participation in
CIN. CIN students leave the program feeling empowered, confident and connected.
For the past five years the CIN student body has increased as well as our academic
offerings. We have been able to offer two full course sequences in English and
Communication Studies, Psychology-Counseling Courses and Library Research
classes. Our participation in the FYE has also brought a much welcomed relationship
with the Math department. We have also steered our students towards Political
Science, Sociology and Service Learning courses as well.
Vision:
As we move into our fifth year as a learning community on campus we are excited to
grow and enhance our program. As a whole, CIN students persist more than non-CIN
students by 12%. Clearly, the CIN community, academic rigor and social justice
framework supports students to achieve their goals. Although our persistence,
completion and retention rates are positive we would like to increase those
percentages within the next three to five years. By focusing on a) strengthening our
core curriculum and community, b) creating a clear pathway for students from high
school to CIN to the four year college and into a Public Service career; c) developing
consistent program assessment strategies we plan to expand the effects a social
justice community can have on the Chabot campus, and ultimately the world.
