Dr. James Hansen, formerly Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, is a
Professor at the Earth Institute of Columbia University, where he directs the Program on
Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions. Dr. Hansen’s research focuses on the causes and
consequences of global climate change using the Earth’s paleoclimate history, ongoing global
observations, and interpretive tools including climate models. His Congressional testimony in
the late 1980s helped raise broad awareness of climate change as a crucial issue for humanity.
He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has been named one of the 100 most
influential people in the world by Time Magazine and one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers by
Foreign Policy. Dr. Hansen is a model of a leading scientist who courageously communicates
the policy implications of his research.
