A harmonized scale is a scale where you are building diatonic harmonies on each of the scale note. Diatonic
harmonies mean that they are built with notes from the scale. It is a goot tool for analyzing chords and chordfunctions for a given scale.
When we are harmonizing in triads, it means that we are building triads (three-note chords) on each note.

We start with the chords played horizontally, with all chords played in a basic root position. We have the
basic voicing 1-3-5 for all chords. Play them slowly and listen to the sound of each chord.

Harmonized C-major scale, Triads, Root position
In the final example we cross to lower set of strings, to play the whole scale vertically. You do not have to
choose the same cross-over points as I have done. But this should give you what you need to play these
triads in root position all over the neck.
We have four groups of three adjacent strings on the guitar: 6-5-4, 5-4-3, 4-3-2 and 3-2-1. But on the two
bottom sets of strings, you use the same chord shapes, but the chord will be a perfect fourth higher on
strings 5-4-3 compared with 6-5-4. These leaves us three groups of fingerings. Then there are three kind of
chords: Major, minor and diminished. To play all the chords used for these harmonized scales with triads in
root positions, you should need 3x3=9 chord shapes to play in all 12 keys. But you do not need as many as 9
shaped. The shape that gives major on the two bottom sets –The Bottom Major Shape – gives a
diminished chord on the top three strings. The shape that gives minor on the two bottom sets –The
Bottom Minor Shape – gives a diminished chord on strings 4-3-2. And the shape that gives a major
chordon strings 4-3-2 – the F-shape – gives a minor chord on the top three strings.
This means that the number of chord shapes you need to know for these harmonized scales in root positions
are down to six: The Bottom Major Shape, The Bottom Minor Shape, The Bottom Diminished Shape,
The F-shape, The Middle Minor Shape and The Middle D-shape.
To learn more about these shapes, go to the Chord Shapes and Sonic Shapes lessons.

root positions, you should need 3x3=9 chord shapes to play in all 12 keys.

We start with the chords played horizontally, with all chords played in a basic root position. We have the
basic voicing 1-3-5 for all chords. Play them slowly and listen to the sound of each chord.

As the horizontal set is on the top three string, we now cross over to a lower set of strings with the first four
chords.

Harmonized B-major scale, Triads, Root position
In the final example we cross to another lower set of strings, to play the whole scale vertically. You do not
have to choose the same cross-over points as I have done. But this should give you what you need to play
these triads in root position all over the neck.
One octave down
We can play this harmonized scale one octave down. Once again we start with the chords played
horizontally, with all chords played in a basic root position.

In the final example we cross all available higher set of strings, to play the whole scale vertically. You do not
have to choose the same cross-over points as I have done. But this should give you what you need to play
these triads in root position all over the neck.

We have the
basic voicing 3-5-1 for all chords. Play them slowly and listen to the sound of each chord.

In the next example we cross to lower set of strings, to play the whole scale vertically. You do not have to
choose the same cross-over points as I have done. But this should give you what you need to play these
triads in root position all over the neck.
One Octave Down
We can play the harmonized scale in this key one octave down. Once again we start with the chords played
horizontally.

In the next example we are crossing over to the higher set of string as soon as it is possible.
In the next example we play vertically across all set of strings that are possible in this key.
To play all the chords used for these harmonized scales with triads in
fisrt inversion, you should need 3x3=9 chord shapes to play in all 12 keys.
To learn more about these shapes, go to the Chord Shapes and Sonic Shapes lessons.

Index to harmonized scales
A harmonized scale is a scale where you are building diatonic harmonies on each of the scale note. Diatonic
harmonies mean that they are built with notes from the scale. It is a goot tool for analyzing chords and chordfunctions for a given scale.
When we are harmonizing in triads, it means that we are building triads (three-note chords) on each note.

We start with the chords played horizontally, with all chords played in a basic root position. We have the
basic voicing 5-1-3 for all chords. Play them slowly and listen to the sound of each chord.

In the next example we cross to lower set of strings, to play the whole scale vertically. You do not have to
choose the same cross-over points as I have done. But this should give you what you need to play these
triads in root position all over the neck.
One Octave Up
We can play the harmonized scale in this key one octave up. Once again we start with the chords played
horizontally.
In the next example we are starting from a lower set of strings, and cross over to the higher set of string

halfway up the scale.
In the next example we cross further down.
To play all the chords used for these harmonized scales with triads in
first inversion, you should need 3x3=9 chord shapes to play in all 12 keys.

Index to harmonized scales
A harmonized scale is a scale where you are building diatonic harmonies on each of the scale note. Diatonic
harmonies mean that they are built with notes from the scale. It is a goot tool for analyzing chords and chordfunctions for a given scale.
When we are harmonizing in triads, it means that we are building triads (three-note chords) on each note.

basic voicing 5-1-3 for all chords. Play them slowly and listen to the sound of each chord.

Harmonized F#-major scale, Triads, 2. iversion
In the next example we cross to lower set of strings, to play the whole scale vertically. You do not have to
choose the same cross-over points as I have done. But this should give you what you need to play these
triads in root position all over the neck.
In the next example, we cross over to the bottom set of strings.
To play all the chords used for these harmonized scales with triads in
first inversion, you should need 3x3=9 chord shapes to play in all 12 keys.

Lesson.
Index to harmonized scales
A harmonized scale is a scale where you are building diatonic harmonies on each of the scale note. Diatonic
harmonies mean that they are built with notes from the scale. It is a goot tool for analyzing chords and chordfunctions for a given scale.
When we are harmonizing in 7th-chords, it means that we are building 7th chords (four-note chords) on
each note. When I am indicating the general voicing of the scale, I include only the numbers (1-5-7-3 etc)
that indicates the basic notes, without any b or #, as they vary from chord to chord.
We start with the chords played horizontally, with all chords played in a basic root position. We have the
basic voicing 1-3-5-7 for all chords. This is not the way you usually would play such chords. It is very hard
(but possible) to play, unless you have big hands. But when you are playing like this, you approach harmonies
more like you would do on a keyboard, and it easier to understand the voice leading and the harmonic context.
Retailers:
In the next example, the chords are in more playable positions, but still played horizontally. The chord-voicing
has changed from 1-3-5-7 to 1-5-7-3. We often have to make these compromises to find playable positions.

Harmonized C-major scale, 7th chords
To get a bit more playable positions, we can cross over to a higher set of strings when this is possible.
If we want to play it fluently, it is better to play vertically - across the various sets of strings. You can of
course decide for yourself where you want to cross over. You do not have to do it at the chords I have

To get a bit more playable positions, we can cross over to a higher set of strings when this is possible.
If we want to play it fluently, it is better to play vertically - across the various sets of strings. You can of
course decide for yourself where you want to cross over. You do not have to do it at the chords I have
indicated.

Harmonized A-major scale, 7th chords
The next is still horizontally, but on a higher set of strings.
We can of course cross over to the top set of strings.
If we want to play it fluently, it is better to play vertically - across the various sets of strings. You can of
course decide for yourself where you want to cross over. You do not have to do it at the chords I have
indicated.
