PROGRAMME IPU PROGRAMME: IPEMU (Independently Powered EMU) Battery powered trains PROBLEM STATEMENT: We need to find alternative solutions to diesel power in areas where electrification is not economically viable. SOLUTION: The IPEMU is an alternative to conventionally electrified railway. The solution uses existing, but leading edge, battery technologies in a railway environment to operate trains. + Energy can be stored on trains to enable a discontinuous energy supply from the infrastructure. This could enable using electric trains on non-electrified lines, converting third rail DC to more efficient operation, and increasing freight electric traction. The solution was successfully demonstrated on a live track under various scenarios, carrying members of the public.
