Road Travel Safety Policy The aspiration of Colas Rail is to eliminate vehicle incidents from our business, including injuries to staff and members of the public from Company related road risk by: Minimising exposure e.g. use of phone or video conferencing. Providing safer alternatives to road travel such as rail transport. Providing properly maintained, safe vehicles where driving is a role requirement. Ensuring only persons fit and licensed to drive vehicles do so for business reasons. The Company objectives are to: od Plan work and journeys to reduce exposure to road related risk Assess the risks relating to the use of vehicles on company business and implement suitable control measures. Strive for continual improvement in occupational road safety performance by minimising risk to those affected by monitoring accidents and incidents on a monthly basis. Implement consistent practices with regard to fleet safety: consult with employees, and update policies and practices accordingly, including fitting suitable safety equipment. Monitor to ensure that the Company vehicle fleet is mechanically safe, and vehicle defects reported by employees are rectified promptly. Monitor to ensure that staff who drive on Company business are legally entitled to drive with a current valid licence for the relevant class of vehicle. Assess driving abilities, and provide driver training for staff who fall below the required standard, or as otherwise required. Ensure as far as is reasonably practicable that all drivers are fit to drive. Provide training for staff on how to carry out vehicle checks, and ensure that these checks are carried out. pr ac tic e In order to ensure the health and safety of vehicle drivers, this policy sets out Company objectives and driver responsibilities. These objectives and responsibilities are in addition to those set out in the Company’s General Policy Statement. Go All Staff have a duty to co-operate in the operation of this policy by: Adhering to Company policies, advice and guidelines relating to road safety, and abiding by the provisions of the Rules of the Road and the Lifesaving Rules. Carrying out vehicle checks as specified by the Company and vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. Allowing adequate time for journeys, including time for breaks on long journeys. Reporting all accidents or damage to a vehicle immediately to your manager Informing your line manager of anything that will impact your fitness to drive Reporting vehicle defects or safety concerns immediately to management and not using the vehicle until the defect is rectified. Showing consideration for the safety of passengers and other road users, including drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. Only use a personal vehicle for business use that is mechanically sound and with appropriate insurance. Only carrying authorised passengers whilst driving company vehicles.
