A National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center
Emory Winship Cancer Institute Overview
As Georgia’s first and only National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center, Emory
University’s Winship Cancer Institute serves as the coordinating center for a vast array of
resources in medical, surgical, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, and the subspecialties of
cancer care throughout Emory University.
Emory Winship is part of Emory’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center, Emory Healthcare
and Emory University. Researchers and clinical members of the cancer center are faculty at
Emory or at partner institutions such as Georgia Institute of Technology. Faculty members
collaborate with national and state agencies, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention and the American Cancer Society. Emory Winship also is enhanced by its close
relationship with Emory’s own School of Medicine, Rollins School of Public Health, and the Nell
Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, all with strong cancer related programs.
In addition, Emory Winship is a partner in the Georgia Cancer Coalition, an innovative
public/private initiative that brings together Georgia’s leading hospitals and universities, biotech
firms, civic groups, and non-profit and government agencies to help treat, prevent and save
lives from cancer. Winship’s partnership with the Georgia Cancer Coalition helps to extend the
benefits of NCI Cancer Center Designation through initiatives such as the Georgia Center for
Oncology Research and Education (Georgia CORE), which works to expand availability of
clinical cancer research throughout Georgia by fostering collaboratives with community
practices.
The Emory Winship Cancer Institute is committed to community events and professional
education. Its largest community event, the annual Celebration of Living, brings together
hundreds of cancer patients and survivors for a day of educational seminars and the special
camaraderie that those whose lives are touched by cancer can share.
Recently, Emory was recognized as one of the top 50 cancer centers in the United
States by U.S. News and World Report and received the Blue Cross Blue Shield Designation for
Treatment of Rare and Complex Cancers. To learn more about the Emory Winship Cancer
