February 2015 WWW.DEPTS.TTU.EDU/HS/BMI Roots to Rise Covenant BodyMind Initiative defines identity as “learning who I am” and defines belonging as “knowing where I fit”. Roots to Rise is an enhancement event for seventh graders that applies both of these concepts using two activities. The aim of this enhancement is to allow students to explore the past. The Surname Matching Game allows students to explore the history of last names through learning meanings of surnames and possible origin of their own name. This history can lead back to identification of ancestors. It was not uncommon for names to describe an occupation, place of birth, or a characteristic of the person/family. The second activity, Coat of Arms, introduces the concept and history of a coat of arms and its purpose. From there, students are then able to create their own. They are able to choose what represents them and/or their families. These activities encourage insight into their family’s past. This contributes to who they are today in hopes of inspiring the acknowledgement that who they are and the paths they take will influence the future. It may be their great, great grandchildren tracing the family back to them someday. This concept exemplifies the name of our enhancement. Your family history has planted the roots for you to rise.
