VII. Essay
The MUST program expects its interns to make commitments to and demonstrate proficiency in four unique principles,
called the MUST outcomes. Two of those outcomes are listed below. Please choose one of the outcomes below and, in
a maximum two-page typed essay, describe how you imagine you will incorporate this principle into your daily
practice as an urban teacher. Please be as specific as possible, and feel free to speculate: our assumption is that you
will not necessarily have a vast number of ideas about the realities of city schools.
Social Justice
The MUST intern is a reflective, responsible teacher-leader who successfully addresses the effects of race, class,
gender, ability, linguistic difference and sexual orientation on student achievement.
Resilience, Resistance & Persistence
The MUST intern addresses the complexities and demands of urban settings by responding appropriately with
resilience, resistance and persistence.
VIII. Degree Status
In addition to being accepted to the MUST Program, you must also be eligible for acceptance to the Graduate College
at Cleveland State University. You will be admitted as a degree-seeking graduate student if you meet the grade point
average entrance requirements as specified by the Graduate College (see CSU Graduate College admission
requirements). A degree-seeking student must have a 2.75 final GPA if the degree has been earned within the past six
years or a 3.00 final GPA if the degree is more than six years old. If you do not meet the grade point average entrance
requirements, you can either take the GRE or the MAT and earn a qualifying score or be admitted as a non-degree
seeking student for Summer 1, complete all summer courses with the grade of B or better, and then apply for degreeseeking admission for the fall semester.
IX. Educator Licensure Test Requirements:
The OAE (Ohio Assessments for Educators), provided by the Evaluation Systems Group of Pearson, is required by all
preservice teachers in the State of Ohio. Interns earning 7-12 licensure are required to take the Assessment of
Professional Knowledge: Adolescence to Young Adult # 003 and the Professional Knowledge Assessment for their
area of licensure. Spanish licensure students take the Assessment of Professional Knowledge Assessment # 004 and the
the ACTFL Oral Proficiency and the Writing Proficiency tests. Interns are required to attempt all tests for their
licensure areas prior to student teaching. Interns must pass all tests required for their licensure areas to be eligible for
licensure.
X. Tuberculosis Testing and BCI/FBI Background Check
Upon admission to the MUST program, you will be required to complete TB testing and BCI and FBI criminal
background checks by July 1.
