The road transport sector has voluntarily committed, on the basis of innovative technologies and practices, to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030 based on transport performance in tkm and pkm and related to the base year 2007.

III. Intelligent Transport System

(ITS) applications to increase road transport efficiency and safety

ITS IRU DRAFT POSITION

   The IRU is in favour of ITS applications for the road transport sector as long as they provide significant measurable safety, environmental and economic benefits.

   ITS applications must be standardised, harmonised and interoperable in order to improve effectiveness and reliability of transport as a whole.

   The application of ITS must to the widest extend possible be on a voluntary basis .

   Road transport operators shall be free to choose their means of transport , ITS equipments and application suppliers .

ITS IRU DRAFT POSITION

   ITS applications must ensure that the appropriate level of confidentiality of commercial data exists .

   ITS applications must ensure that all documents of transport are made available in electronic form .

   Any future EU coordinated action should focus on deployment of proven solutions .

   Any deployment of ITS should include the necessary training of all stakeholders .

   Any deployment plan for ITS applications should include a solid business case , what benefits exist and the costs involved . In this respect incentives should be included.

IV. Striving for freedom of choice to ensure optimal and safe road transport: the example of the dangerous goods transport
