The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) has approved NIU as a participant in IIA’s Endorsed
Internal Auditing Program. To receive an IIA certificate of completion, a student must have a
B.S. in accountancy or an M.A.S. degree and complete ACCY 360, ACCY 462, an approved
accountancy elective, and an academic internship (ACCY 473) in the internal auditing area. A
student completing the internal audit course work will have the designation Completion of
internal audit course work as endorsed by the Institute of Internal Auditors on their official NIU
transcript.
Rationale: Editorial changes to existing copy clarify the type of internship required for the certificate. Additional
language provides students with university verification of completion of the IIA internal audit course work.

Certificate of Graduate Study
Management Information Systems (15)
This certificate provides working professionals with the opportunity to add value to their
positions through advanced course work, to obtain credentials necessary to support their current
position, and to increase employability within the field of information technology.
Courses used to satisfy the requirements for the certificate may also be applied toward a graduate
degree in Management Information Systems (MIS). OMIS 507 (Business Information Systems) is
a prerequisite course that must be completed prior to enrollment in the MIS certificate courses.
OMIS 507 may be waived by passing an exemption examination.
Students interested in this certificate should contact the MIS Graduate Program Coordinator for
admission procedures and other information.

OMIS 660, Business Telecommunications (3),

One of the following (3):
OMIS 621, Computer Simulation in Business (3)
OMIS 649, Business Computing Environments (3)
OMIS 675, Technologies and Applications of Electronic Business (3)
OMIS 679, Business Geographics (3)
OMIS 694, Advanced Topics in Information Systems (3)
Rationale: A Certificate of Graduate Studies in MIS will address the societal/educational needs
of working adults by providing a broader base of training and skills in areas related to the
students’ undergraduate majors and/or professional positions. Many working professionals find
themselves in career areas unrelated to their undergraduate courses of study. They migrate to
occupations based essentially on interest, skill, expertise and learned adaptability; and have a
need for advanced education and credentials to support that path. The certificate is not
designed to replace an advanced degree but will instead enhance an individual’s professional
growth and development.
Note: This certificate should also be included in the listing on page 11 of the Graduate Catalog.
On page 13 under Graduate Concentrations and Certificates of Graduate Study, the contact
person for the Management Information Systems certificate is Chair, Department of Operations
Management and Information Systems.
