375. ACCOUNTANCY WRITING LAB (1). Development of effective written communication
skills appropriate for accounting professionals. The course will provide the accounting specific
context for students to integrate technical accounting knowledge with the skills and abilities
needed to communicate that knowledge in written form within a professional accounting
environment. Must be taken concurrently with ACCY 320 or ACCY 360. PRQ: ACCY 310 with
a grade of C or better; COMS 100; ENGL 104 or ENGL 105. CRQ: UBUS 311.
Rationale: The ability of our students to communicate in the written form is essential to their success in the
accounting profession. The preparation of coherent, concise, clear, and critically examined documents forms the
foundation of our students’ ability to communicate technical content.
Note on duplication: No other department offers a writing laboratory that has a focus on the preparation of
documents in an accounting context.

415. DATA ANALYTICS IN ACCOUNTING (3). Study of the use of accounting data to
identify, analyze and solve business problems. Examines the processes needed to develop, report
and analyze accounting data and the business risks related to data collection, storage and use.
PRQ: ACCY 360 with a grade of C or better and ACCY 375 with a grade of C or better. CRQ:
ACCY 450.
Rationale: The 2013 AACSB standards require accounting programs to include accounting data analytics in their
curricula. Accounting professionals are expected to know how accounting data is created, collected, stored, and
accessed. As the custodians of an organization’s assets, accountants are expected to understand and implement
controls over the storage and use of an organization’s data. Further, as business professionals, accountants are
expected to know how to use this vast source of data to make better business decisions and identify potential risks.
Understanding how to use data to identify, analyze and solve business problems provides an opportunity for the
accounting professional to become a forward thinking strategic partner in the organization. The challenge for
accountants is to develop the skill set needed to extract value from big data through advanced analytics.
Note on Duplication: The undergraduate catalog has been reviewed, and no other class has been identified that uses
business analytics to formulate and solve problems in an accounting context.

653. ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS CONFIGURATION WITH SAP (3). This course is designed to
help students continue to build skills and knowledge about SAP. This course will provide
students with a thorough understanding of both the role that Enterprise Resource Planning
Systems (ERPs) play in an organization and the challenging task of implementing and
configuring the Information System (IS) function. Projects and case studies will be assigned that
afford the student the opportunity to work through many real-life business situations using the
SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) system and explore the interaction among the different
business processes.
Rationale: The content of this class was offered in Fall 2013 as a special topics section of OMIS 694, Advanced
Topics in Information Systems. The course attracted most of the MIS students in the program. Due to the increasing
students’ interest, the proposed course was again offered in Fall 2014. The rationale for this new course was based
on the technology trend and the employment trend. It was also highly recommended by the OM&IS Executive
Advisory Council.
