OBSERVING DESCRIPTION Purpose: Given that we may have up to a 17 arcmin boresight uncertainty (3 sigma) from the DTA deployment and SM and PMSA deployments, we must measure and correct for that error in order to be able to point JWST at any star. This is achieved by mosaicking a large area of the sky using 1 JWST Proposal 1134 (Created: Friday, May 20, 2016 8:00:29 PM EST) - Overview NIRCam. Rationale: This proposal makes use of NIRCam SW since it is expected to become available first. NIRCam LW data will be downlinked and only used to fill the SW 5" inter-chip gaps if necessary, but does not need to be of similar quality. Parallel observations with FGS imaging and/or NIRISS would provide additional coverage, but for simplicity are not included. Not only is this the very first major imaging activity with JWST, as of the mid 2015 commissioning timeline it is expected that NIRISS will not yet be available, and is unknown if the FGS would be available at this time. Description: 7 observations are included in this file. Each observation is a dense mosaic of a particular region of the sky. They are as follows: - Central: a 25' x 24' region centered on the nominal pointing - W: a 9' x 24' region offset to the +x side of the central region - E: a 9' x 24' region offset to the -x side of the central region - NW: a 20' x 9' region offset to the +x and +y of the central region - NE: a 20' x 9' region offset to the -x and -y of the central region - SW: a 20' x 9' region offset to the +x and -y of the central region - SE: a 20' x 9' region offset to the -x and -y of the central region The intent is to first conduct the observation for the central region. All other observations are on hold. After the majority of segments are found, we will have an idea of the directionality of the boresight offset. If not all 18 segments were found in the center, we can then select one or more of the additional regions based on the estimated boresight center. The dense mosaic spacing is chosen such that there is 24" of overlap between the side of the module gap and the edge of the next mosaic tile. The coarse ACS pointing uncertainty, which compounds over the mosaic tiles, should be ~8" 1 sigma for the central patch of ~100 tiles.
