A Message from
Foundation Leadership
To our Alumni and Friends:
Thank you for making fiscal year 2014 a banner year! Fundraising records
were set, with generous donors like you helping the University achieve $20.3
million in new gifts and pledges.
The CSU Foundation, which stewards the gifts that you and others entrust to
us, saw its funds under investment grow to $72.3 million, the highest total
ever. Our endowment investment portfolio realized an incredibly strong 17.3
percent return for the 12 months ending June 30, 2014. The market value of
the endowment was $66.2 million, which surpasses last year’s value of $55.9
million. The outlook for the current fiscal year is positive as well.
Since its founding in 1964, Cleveland State University has grown to be a
vibrant urban center in the heart of downtown Cleveland. Tremendous positive
change has occurred over 50 years — in the physical campus, the academic
program, enrollment, and the University’s leadership role in Northeast Ohio
and beyond. We appreciate the role you have played in CSU’s success.
As we look to the next 50 years and beyond, CSU remains committed to
providing all students with an excellent education at an affordable price.
For that, we need your ongoing support.
Both CSU and the CSU Foundation are thriving, thanks to your engagement.
We look forward to your continued partnership and investment in Cleveland
State University and its students.

Don and Pam Washkewicz
A transformative gift of $10
million from alumnus Don
Washkewicz, his wife Pam, and the
Parker Hannifin Foundation equals the largestever gift in University history and is the largest ever
for engineering. In appreciation, CSU renamed the
College of Engineering as the Washkewicz College
of Engineering.
The gift provides for engineering scholarships as well
as major infrastructure improvements to Fenn Hall
(formerly Stilwell Hall), home of the engineering
program. Improvements will include a Learning
Incubator for Undergraduate Education and a
Laboratory for Research and Innovation – facilities
that will foster an academic environment that
promotes innovation, discovery, entrepreneurship,
and collaboration with industry.
3
Washkewicz, who graduated from CSU
with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical
engineering in 1972, is the chairman, chief executive
officer and president of Parker Hannifin Corporation,
the Cleveland-headquartered global leader in motion
and control technologies.
“Pam and I and the Parker Foundation are pleased
to give back to the school that gave me and so many
others such a tremendous start. I am honored to have
my name associated with the College but even more so
I am excited to be investing in the legacy of the future.
I am incredibly proud to help enhance the education
and lives of future leaders at CSU,” said Washkewicz.

This generous gift funds merit scholarships and the
Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Chair in Humanities,
an endowed position to be held by the dean of the
new Honors College. It also provides
significant funding to renovate the
exterior of the Main Classroom building
which houses the Mandel College.
The Mandel Honors College, the ninth college at CSU,
enrolls more than 500 students from the highly selective
University Honors and University Scholars programs.

The Sullivan/Deckard Opportunity
Scholarship Program – established
with a combined $2.3 million gift from Frank
and Barbara Sullivan and Jenniffer and Daryl

who are aging out of foster care and wish to pursue a
college degree.
This population faces extreme challenges when they
abruptly transition from dependence on the foster care
system to total independence as emancipated adults. Few
enroll in college; even fewer earn degrees. The Sullivan/
Deckard Opportunity Scholarship will provide

continuous, customized support to
address the complex needs of these
young people and promote their personal
development, academic success and degree completion.
Sullivan is the chairman and chief executive officer
of RPM International; his wife serves on the board
of directors for Fill This House, an organization that
provides household goods to newly emancipated young
adults. Jenniffer Deckard is the chief executive officer of
Fairmount Santrol; her husband is general manager of
Black Lab, LLC, a Fairmount subsidiary.

Alumni Lee and Larry Glasscock
and The Glasscock Family
Foundation pledged $1 million to fund full-tuition
scholarships, including room and board, for first-generation
college students at the Monte Ahuja College of Business.
The Indianapolis couple credit CSU for impacting
their personal and professional lives, and say they feel
fortunate to be able to give back to the school that
helped them get started. By funding a scholarship that
includes room and board they hope to provide students
with “the full college experience.”
Lee Glasscock graduated in 1991 with
a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Larry Glasscock graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s
degree in business and enjoyed a career of 40-plus years
in the banking and health insurance industries, retiring
as CEO of Wellpoint Inc. in 2007. He is a former
member of the CSU Foundation Board of Directors and
former president of the CSU Alumni Association Board

through membership in the Legacy Society. Thank you to
the following Legacy Society members whose gifts were
realized in fiscal year 2014.
EILEEN C. CORTES
Eileen Cortes, a long-time supporter of the
University, passed away in December 2012.
In 1993, she created a scholarship fund in
honor of her late husband, Carlos Cortes,
now named the Carlos F. and Eileen C.
Cortes Scholarship Fund. The fund provides
scholarship and fellowship support to
students specializing in school psychology.
She and her late husband both worked for
the Cleveland Metropolitan Schools – she as
a teacher and he as a school psychologist.
This gift continues their legacy of making a
difference in the lives of young people.
THOMAS J. GRAY, SR., JD ’41
Thomas Gray created the Thomas J. Gray, Sr.
Endowed Scholarship through his trust. The
gift provides scholarship support for students
of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law who
demonstrate a commitment to community service. As a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts
of America, Mr. Gray was passionate about
providing opportunities for young people to
develop their leadership skills and pursue their
educational goals. He passed away in January
2014. With this gift, his legacy will benefit
future generations of legal professionals.
MARVIN H. JONES
Marvin Jones, an Art Department faculty
member who passed away in February 2005,
taught Studio Art from 1976 through 2004. He
retired as Professor Emeritus. His work appeared
in over 550 group exhibitions and is included in
more than 40 public collections in the United
States, Canada, Europe and Japan. The generous
gift of 63 pieces of Professor Jones’ work will
be exhibited at the Galleries at CSU and made
available for use by the Art Department in its
curriculum, particularly Studio Art courses.
ROBERT S. MALAGA
Known as “Mister Tennis” for putting Cleveland
on the tennis map worldwide, Robert Malaga
coached Cleveland State’s men and women’s
teams in the 1980s and was a strong supporter
of CSU’s tennis program. A judge on both the
Cleveland Municipal Court and the Cuyahoga
County Common Pleas Court, as well as a
director of the Ohio Lottery in the 1970s,
Mr. Malaga passed away in July 2012. A gift
from his trust supports scholarships through
the Robert S. Malaga Endowment Fund.
FREDERICK H. RAY, BSE ’49
Frederick Ray’s bequest was made in memory
of his late wife Dorothy (Mainey) Ray, a fellow
engineer who studied at Purdue University
and whom he met in Cleveland. The Ray gift
will support the planned renovation of Fenn
Hall, home of the Washkewicz College of
Engineering. This very generous gift illustrates
the enduring legacy of the College and will
add significant momentum to the creation
of a state-of-the-art engineering learning
environment. As a student, Mr. Ray was an
active member of the Iota Eta, Alpha Chi and
Phi Epsilon Nu fraternities. He also served as
president of the Fenn Society of Structural

P H I L A N T H R O P Y AT W O R K
A $250,000 gift from donors who wish to remain
anonymous funds the new Center for Population
Dynamics in the Maxine Goodman Levin College
of Urban Affairs.
Groundbreaking research conducted by Center director
Richey Piiparinen and his team is examining how influxes
25
of new people and new ideas can help cities compete in
the global economy and promote quality of life.
The donors, who are strong civic boosters, believe that
research on how migration reinvigorates cities will benefit
the economic development of Cleveland and other cities.
P H I L A N T H R O P Y AT W O R K
The Deckard Fellows with
Mayor Frank Jackson
Students who comprise the first
class of Deckard Family Civic
Fellows are supplementing their classroom studies and
experiencing public service firsthand through community
engagement opportunities with the City of Cleveland.
A portion of a $100,000 gift from Jenniffer and Daryl
Deckard funds the Deckard Family Civic Fellows
Scholarship. The scholarship encourages service learning,
provides students with opportunities to engage in
activities that address Northeast Ohio’s urban challenges,
and supports the development of
the next generation of civic and
community leaders. The fund provides scholarships for
juniors and seniors who have been directly involved in
engagement opportunities provided by the University and
face significant financial obstacles while striving to receive
their degrees.
A portion of the Deckard gift also supports renovations to
the Athletics Family Room in the Wolstein Center.

Tyler Westfall
Monte Ahuja College of Business
Tyler is proud to be the first recipient of the Glasscock Family
Foundation Scholarship, funded by CSU alumni Lee and Larry
Glasscock and their family. A product of Cleveland’s Slavic
Village and St. Ignatius High School, he is majoring in business
administration with the goal of attending law school and
becoming a corporate lawyer.
When he’s not hitting the books, Tyler participates in the
business mentoring program and the baseball club. He will
graduate in May 2018 and knows his future is bright because
of his CSU education and engaged learning experience.

Samuel Sonya
Washkewicz College of Engineering
Growing up Nigeria, Sam dreamed of coming to the United States
for college. In 2012, his dream came true when he was accepted to
CSU’s Washkewicz College of Engineering. He packed his bags, said
good-bye to his family and headed to a country he did not know to
major in chemical engineering.
Scholarships from the Washkewicz College of Engineering, the
LINK program and the Career Success Network enabled Sam to get
fully immersed in campus life. He has been a Student Government
Association senator, a Presidential Student Ambassador, and a
Student Alumni Association board member, and is currently
president of the National Society of Black Engineers. He will
graduate in May 2017 and hopes to pursue a master’s degree.

Supporting
Cleveland State
University
PLEDGE
A pledge enables you to make a commitment that
is paid over a period of time based on an agreedupon schedule of payments.
There are many ways to
support CSU. For details,
visit www.csuohio.edu/giving
or call 216-523-7517.
UNRESTRICTED GIFT
An unrestricted gift, with no specified purpose,
gives CSU flexibility to fund special opportunities
and meet emergency needs.
DESIGNATED GIFT
A donor may designate a gift for a specific purpose
such as scholarships, faculty research, or a
particular College, department or program.
CASH AND APPRECIATED SECURITIES
These gifts make funds available for immediate use
and may offer tax advantages to donors. We accept
personal checks and most credit cards. Visit our
secure giving site at www.csuohio.edu/giving.
MATCHING GIFT
Corporate matches may increase your gift
significantly. Contact your personnel or benefits
office for more information.
HONOR/MEMORIAL GIFTS
CSU accepts donations made in honor or memory
of your loved ones. Notification of the gift will be
sent to the individual if he or she is living, or to the
family of the deceased.
PLANNED GIFTS
Many options exist to tailor and structure gifts that
fulfill your estate planning needs while providing
lasting support for CSU. Common types of planned gifts
include bequests, charitable gift annuities, designation
of retirement plan assets, charitable remainder or
lead trusts, life insurance policies and real estate.
If you have already remembered CSU in your
estate plan or would like to discuss such a gift,
please call 216.875.9833.
